seeds of l. williamsii are illegal in the us. ALL members of the genus Lophophora are illegal in california.
according to erowid: live peyote is also schedule 1 in france. possesion of live peyote plants will get you put in jail in russia.
apparently its also illegal in austrailia too and confiscations and charges have been popping up, even from large, non-druggish cactus collections.

why would california make the other varieties illegal, they arne't psychoactive are they?
its pretty silly in the US given we allow the NAC to have peyote and it isn't a recreational drug at all, is probably used far less than legal painkillers and things like that. but hey....

The only reason peyote regulations were initially brought in was to suppress the indigenous religions. This was probably more so in Mexico but the basis of oppression is the same. Not only did Europeans have to commit genocide and steal the land of the indigenous people but they had to try and destroy their culture and religious freedoms as well. Those crimes are still evident today in prejudice and social inequality. Even though the regulations allow the NAC to take Peyote there is still a great confusing mist of legal boundaries where religious people are criminalized for their practices.

But hey, legal painkillers are a nice taxable and profitable drug!

Indeed the criminalization was an act of religious discrimination, intentional or not, but it didn't happen until the 70s did it? I'm familiar that the NAC in the beginning of our nation's absurd history went into heavy legal battles but a particular leader for their cause whose name escapes me held up through the court system and the church and their tradition was established.
so if it was criminalized in the 70s, why, was it even near as popular as LSD ? Weren't psilocybin and mescaline relatively unknown to anyone but a few in midst of LSD being widely popular? I suppose the answer to the why lies in simple discrimination, but it just is odd peyote took the scarlet letter given that it is not a popular substance.

I believe your friends where mistaken, the cacti vendor who I usually get my seeds from sell live peyote. I have never seen them listed as illegal on any Swedish drug-boards, and at least in the law-books I've read it isn't listed.
