Cheers, they are in darkness at the moment although some guides suggest shining a light onto the lids so that the jars are in indirect light, is this better?

Only do that to initiate pinning. If yer gonna case..it doesn't matter cause you dont' want em to pin. You leave em in dark till they fully colonized, then take em out, and put em in light to intiate pinning (if yer gonna grow straight from cake).
