How long did your casing take to colonize?
    #704548 - 06/27/02 12:48 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

Hi, im on my first casing attempt, i spawned 4 pf cakes into pasterized straw in a big rubermaid container, and let that colonize, it went fast, then i cased with the 50/50 peat/verm with oyster shells and lime, slightly less than an inch, and my substrate is around 3-4 inches, Im wondering if anyone else here has had a similar setup, and how long it has taken for the mycelium to penitrate the casing layer good enough to initiate pinning, ive been waiting about a week and a half, maybe a bit longer, i see it poking through in a very few places, and ive patched those, im sure i made my casing layer a little too deep, i dont mind the wait, im sure it will end up giving me better mushies, in theory(i hope), I pretty sure there are no contams, nothing noticable at least. any help, advise, stories of success/failure with similar setups would be very much appreciated, thanks
Lucid.

Why did you patch...you should birth the casing when you see the first mycelium poking up as long as the layer is level. Whne the mycelium starts poking up a little more go ahead and birth it.

well, its not comming up level, thats the problem, some of the straw goes a bit higher than the rest and is causing a few areas to poke up way before the rest.
