White Jelly and a very fashionable bug.
    #7042295 - 06/13/07 02:27 PM (16 years, 8 months ago)

I've been finding this white jelly growing on fallen logs in bluefoot habitat. I'm not sure what it is, but it looks tasty.

I also saw this rare bug the other day. Incredibly colorful fellow.

Any guesses on ID?

The white jelly looks like rooting cauliflower mushroom to me, known as Sparassis radicata, and is listed as a choice edible.

The bug is of the family Buprestidae, a type of woodloving metallic beetle.

Thanks for the bug IDs GoodbyeOrb. I have found cauliflower mushrooms before, and they are indeed choice edibles. Sauteed in butter they reminded me of fried chicken skin.

The Jelly fungus above is something different. Its flesh is gelatinous like a Woodear.

Any guess on genus for the beetle?

I'm thinking Chrysochroa mniszechii on the beetle, where are you located? You have me curious about the mushroom now.

Thank you Coon. According to mushroomexpert.com edibility Exidia alba is unknown. Maybe I'll try it sometime, but not this year.

Smartweed Caterpillar - Acronicta oblinita

The smartweed caterpillar is highly variable in color. In all cases they have an interrupted yellow stripe below white spiracles, and a few very long hairs sticking out from the head and the tail.
