Organic Compost in 50 lb. bags. Aged Horse Manure.
    #7037553 - 06/12/07 08:19 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Does anyone know if Organic Compost, Aged Horse Manure would work as a substrate. I know only some work at home depot and others like that however, this is coming from a local garden center. Does anyone know any questions I could ask to see if this stuff will work?

Thank you for any help

It's pretty hit or miss. If you're having problems finding a friendly farm, I'd advise just mixing it up 50/50 with straw. Best case you find an excellent, $3/40lb substrate, worst case the mycelium will colonize, and fruit excellently, from the straw alone.

I should have mentioned...that manure stuff is like dirt in its consistency. Be advised that the traditional method on this site for pasteurization (dunk it in 170-5 degree water for an hour, let cool) will not be a pretty process. Premix your substrate, get it to field capacity, load that shit into oven bags, and bake w/thermometer in there.

The alternative...is messy. Trust me

Thanks. Yeah I got bad manure and had to do that. It was pretty bad. If I can get access to horse manure on a farm, Does it need to be aged? Also do I need to add gypsum or other additives?
Thank you again

Hey AIR...

1) Access to a farm is always easier than you think. Hpoo is widely used as fertilizer; go up there on a weekend and ask. You'll get highly effective substrate at worst, build a great relationship with some neighbors and have some fun at best. It needs to be aged, yes. But if you're at a farm...just pick up the dry stuff. Even fresh, hpoo doesn't smell like much. There's just a moderate ammonia scent, one which will disappear in a few weeks. Basically, you want old hpoo, and once you're there, you'll know what that is. It looks like very finely shredded straw.

2) Nope! Hpoo is great by itself. You can add straw to increase colonization speed but really...you don't get better than the real deal. Gypsum and the like, unless I'm missing something, are used to get the pH nailed properly in casings.

But really you can make your own witches brew of substrate  and anything that's healthy can be used in moderation. Straw, hpoo, coir, even a touch of coffee grounds or blood meal.

Good luck!

Just ask them if the material has any fungicides, and if it does not, ask if it would be suitable for growing mushrooms.

You're telling this guy to walk up to Home Depot, ask if the *manure* has fungicides (something I've never even heard of), and then inquire directly whether he can grow shrooms on it (because they'd know)?

You can inquire about the fungicides by telling them you are growing roses and need the ground to be able to sustain fungi growth for healthier plants. Most bags will have on them if they contain fungicides because it's more expensive to add them and it's a selling point.
