Anyone Ever Explode a ROCKER TOP PC?

I'm just trying to figure out how dangerous mine is. Its old, its used, it works...and I think the rocker top would blow before the cooker, but I'm not sure.
Also, if a jar blew up inside, would that release enough instant pressure to blow a PC?
I'm speaking SPECIFICALLY about Mirro and the like, which use a rocker top to monitor pressure.

Okay, the rocker just rides on there, so it will shoot off before the PC were to "Explode". However, either way, change your overpressure release valve (Funny looking rubber plug that wedges in a hole in the lid) and you should be good to go! HOWEVER--- If you haven't already, take the time to either find your PC's instruction manual online, or call mirro and order a replacement.

It depends on how old it is and where it's made. I don't trust the WW2 era pressure cookers, partly due to age, and partly due to the fact that during WW2, all the top grade aluminum was going to the war effort, leaving poor quality aluminum for the domestic household markets.
I don't trust ANYthing made in china. I'd suggest an All American. It will pay for itself many times over. RR

While we are on that topic, RR, where is a good place to get an All American for a decent price?

I threw the cash down for an all american and I have to say that I have no regrets. It is a finely machined piece of equipment. I've seen others in stores that had the twist locking design and were of a standard cookware thickness. The All-American on the other hand, is thick and heavy. I have full confidence that it wont fail in my lifetime as long as i keep an eye on the rubber stopper.
Hey RR, do you use vaseline on the lip of your AA every time you PC things?

A jar couldn't possibly blow up inside of the pressure cooker because of the fact that the pressure inside the jar is equal to the pressure outside the jar (Remember, do not seal your jars airtight.)I would do a trial run with it making sure the petcock works and the gasket isn't dried up. Would be a good idea to have the gauge checked also. Usually when you buy a gasket it comes with the safety plug (Some models), so should probably replace that too.

I think I'd be more worried about an older model pressure cooker with the Pressure Relief Valve...and the metal blow out device.
or something inside the pressure cooker clogging up the top relief area in the lid... creating a pressure build up.
I worked with boilers for a living... a pressure cooker is alot like a steam boiler to a certain degree.
If the steam can't be released... it's going to build up pressure and finally blow at a certain point. That is why there is almost always a safety blow out or some kind of relief valve.
Pressurized vessles can be a bomb...if they are not maintained properly. Including a pressure cooker!~
There was a boiler explosion down on one of the Seattle piers many years ago... a pressure relief valve failed...and the safety failed too. and it blew up...hard core!~ It killed this Boiler tech and blew up a shit load of new cars!~
Be very careful with older pressure cookers and never leave them un-attended for very long!~
I always suggest that people that have older model All American's and other type of pressure cookers replace the Pressure Relief Valve...the toggle valve. I'd replace it every couple years if you truely value your life.
I do!~

That sounds complicated.
My presto has a little rubber plug that blows when the PC gets to about 21 psi (I've blown it b4) I don't see how it could get stuck in there, but I guess it could happen. The biggest problem is trying to find the damn thing tho, cuz it bounces all over the place. Either way, you should replace it at least annually, whether or not it blows.

What is the difference between the all american canner and the all american sterilizer? You don't use water in the sterilizer, right?
Which AA canner do you have?

Thanks for all the info guys.
I'll take some photos and post them on here...maybe it will help others in the future.
Mine is a Mirro 6 quart. Its small...I only do 2 quart jars at a time. I bought it off eBay--I'd say its probably 15 years old tops.
The rubber gasket I have works, although it does leak until the beast gets up to speed.
AS for the rubber safety release valve...any photos of this? Mine looks like epoxy.
I usually get it up to 15psi, then drop the heat until it rocks 80% of the time, and run for 90 minutes or so.
I've never had contams yet, and probably done 30 jars this way.
Its very loose when I twist on the top...I thought it would be a lot tighter when I got it.
