Sterilization Technique?
    #703224 - 06/26/02 04:05 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Hi this is my first post here... I recently started growing shroms. I did a fair bit of research on the internet, then finally went out and bought a syringe of B+...

I used vermiculite with white rice flower in large jars (1+ pint).

I did four jars to start. I didnt want to use the whole syringe on my first attempt.

I dont have a steamer or pressure cooker, so I simply boiled the jars for over an hour with the water coming just up to where the tinfoil wrapped around the lid.

I innoculated the jars about an hour after I took them out of the water. Only one jar seems to be doing anything. I started this batch exactly one month ago, and itll be another week before the remaining jar is ready for the aquarium.

I dont consider this bad. This jar is about 3 times the size of a half pint jar. Anyway, the point/question is... The 3 jars that did nothing, really did nothing. No fungus of any type grew in it what-so-ever... in a months time. I cleaned them out today, and they didnt really smell. And no sign of anything.

Obviously, I innoculated the jars too early. And the heat killed the spores. But besides that, im guessing the sterilization worked really well?

Yeah that is the point of sterilization!

Sounds like you either cooked the spores, or used the wrong type of rice flour. White rice does not contain any (or very little) nutritional value. Thats why you need to buy brown rice flour.

maybe they were too wet, like not enough vermiculite to give passage, happens to me sometimes.

I think the mixture was alright. Though this second batch ive done looks even better... (As far as passage goes)

And damn, I didnt know about the white/brown rice flower thing. I know the instructions said brown rice flower... White rice flower is just the first thing I found, and didnt think it would matter.

I would definately wait longer than an hour after boiling before innoculating. Your lucky to have 1 jar that worked. Let them cool a little longer like 3-5 hours, the core of those jars are still extremely hot after an hour.

I waited about 2 and a half hours this time. The jars were cool to touch...

Well... The instructions said to wait 2 hours. So I waited a while longer than that. I guess I get impatient. Next time Ill let them cool over night.

always leave the over night eg 24 hrs then use the spores , 1 or 2 hrs is not long enough
