Definitely actuve if they are blue bruising with that purplish/brown spore print. I'd say a young sub or maybe one of the closely related sub species. there's no real way of knowing unless you sent it to a lab. Nice finds tho! chomp em!

Should be brown to purple brown, looks good though I'm on the top half of the planet and have never seen one in person. Urb, you may be confusing sub - Psilocybe subaeruginosa -for subb - Panaeolus subbalteatus. Psilocybes have purple-brown prints, Paneaolus species have black prints.

Yea i tried calling them 'subarus' like the car manufacturer and their latin 'subaeruginosa' name to avoid the confusion but i got laughed at by others for my silly nic name for them lol.
Cheers for the help xmush. Very happy as the patch this specimen is from is a wild patch in my backyard that i only just discovered.

theres MASSIVE variation around auckland bro...unbelievably so...
Im really keen for East to start cranking so i can pop up some macro comparison pics but ive found that one of the major factors seems to be the sub strata...the subs found in nice normal brown bark are always teh beautiful caramel colour and tend to be much larger, often upturned and wavy upon maturity, whereas the ones found in mulch are usually smaller and more traditional looking...
Some of the major points of difference ive found are;
Stalk colour; some are a very pure white with black flecks, others are a much darker almost pinkish brown colour, certainly not white
Stalk size; some seem to get absolutely massive, more than half a centimetre,whereas other patches for the same size mushroom will only be 2-3mm
Stalk composition; Some will seem to have hollowed and not at all fibrey stalks...this type seems to grow more in clusters and will tend to have much more downturned caps, often looking quite pouchy. The big thick stalks and then other thinner stalks will be a nice pure white but much more fibrous and hard to break...these ones tend to grow more in 2's and 3's and seem to prefer shelter and be a bit fussier
Cap colour: Ranging from a dark smooth caramel, even when bone dry to a much paler almost yellow colour even when quite damp
Cap shape: Some seem to have almost no visible umbonate and the caps stay clearly downturned in an almost semi circular shape regardless of maturity. The darker caramel ones will tend to turn up and become wavy upon maturity.
The one down the bottom im not really sure about but the top fullas seem to be the nice traditional looking fussy subs that grow in 2's and 3's, prefer shelter and have the thinner, highly fibrillose stalks that are hard to break. Distinctive whiter stalk.
I note the fulla down the bottom seems to have a much darker brownish looking stalk but that spore print has teh same dusty look to it that i usually find synonymous with subs.
Is the substrata the same for both patches?
o and in regards to spore print, yes...many of my finds last season (teh more caramel upturned buggers which tended to grow on brown bark) had a much stronger brown coloured print...you wouldnt really call it purple brown at all
