Does alcohol dry up fast?
    #7020558 - 06/07/07 07:40 PM (16 years, 9 months ago)

if i put 99% rubbing alcohol in a half pint jar, seal, shake, open, pour out, seal, and then realize that a little bit is still in the jar, will that little bit dry up if there are holes in the lid with coffee filters wrapped around? will it dry up quickly? will it leave residue that could harm a spore sprint/syringe?

thanks.

I'd guess that it will dry up rather quickly but why not sanitize the jar in a pressure cooker or the like?

"If you have a thing that does a thing, does it do the thing fast enough to let me do this thing?"

How can anyone know the answer to that for sure? There are lots of variables, and no specifics. Alcohol DOES dry up fast, but fast enough? I don't know, man, that's not really a question anyone can answer without being there.

figgusfiddus, master of the "wtf why did you even ask this" question. 5 shrooms, man.

LayYouIn...what possible circumstance could lead to you asking that? Anything that comes into contact with your "spore print/syringe" will need to be sterilized first. Ethanol boils at about 175-85, if my memory is correct.

You shouldn't need alcohol to touch your jars at all. I, for one, dishwash.

Weird.

99% alcohol is a poor sanitizer. The whole idea of using alcohol is to kill bacteria and mold spores. Cells don't admit substances without water. That's why up to 30% water is added to alcohol used to sanitize skin or other surfaces. It tricks the cell walls into admitting it, and then as the alcohol evaporates back out, it kills the cell.

In addition, trying to stop contaminants with a coffee filter is like trying to stop a bird with a barbed wire fence. Look at a coffee filter under a microscope. The holes in it are ten times or more the size of contaminant spores.
