Anyone use this dehydrator?
    #7022550 - 06/08/07 01:41 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Anyone use a Nesco Jerky Xpress dehydrator?

I'm a little concerned about potency loss...

I got it as a gift. It's a pretty cheap model and has no temperature control. I was thinking of using it for my fruits, but I can't find the operating temperature of this thing anywhere.
The only specs I could find via the internet/manual is that it's
350 Watt, Fixed Temperature. Thanks-

I use the Nesco Snackmaster Express Food Dehydrator. It does have a temp control knob. It's the 500 watt model, but I always run it on its lowest setting (which really isn't necessary). I think it would be quite comparable to the 350 watt model on its low setting.

I believe it actually HELPS with my potency compared to fan drying. It dries quicker, limiting oxidation, and gets them cracker dry in a day and a half. That way they can be properly stored in an air-tight refrigerated container in less than half the time of a comparable fan dry.

Bottom line, your dehydrator will work fine.

Awesome. Thanks for the input Premed. I'll give it a shot on my next grow.

Why not run it with your candy/meat therm inside?

I'm guessing it's about 150F. That's what my old one ran at, the one without a gauge/therm.

The one I use has no temp control I took off the venting cover to let it run wide open keeping the temp down runs at about 110.

Not a bad idea, jeetered

300W smacks me as a *lot* of power for a typically 95F implement. I'd go with jeetered and make sure that sucker isn't pumping out damagingly hot air.

Or get a thermometer!

Edit: someone should really block my posting privileges. Not only are both of my answers stated earlier in the thread...but better  Sorry.

Cool. Those are some good tips for manipulating the temperature. Thanks guys. I'll have to do some experimenting.

Now, where did I leave that thermometer.....

The chances that the dehydrator will run at a temperature hot enough to damage the mushrooms is pretty slim. Just try a batch in it with or without a thermometer and monitor the time it takes dry. I know that even with RH values of 80% or so a good dehydrator should get mushrooms cracker-dry in no more than 12 hours if not less.

You should experience negligible losses in potency with most Ps. cubensis strains; even operating your dehydrator at temperatures of 125-150 degrees Fahrenheit.
