yeah, you have to take into consideration the fact that if it was a big/old plant it has a pretty massive root system and when you chop most of it down all that root mass is somewhat unnecessary and it will take the pot much more time to dry up!

what you should have done was trim the root system (about a third of it) and re potted with some new soil (and some sand or something to help with drainage on the bottom) and then water it much less frequently until there's enough foliage to use all the water!

anyway i'm sorry to hear about your loss but at least you have hope for the future right?
you probably have enough clones to keep on going so don't beat yr self up too much about it...
