The other day i was handed a pamphlet about "falun dafa", and it really got my interest going about eastern religions and philosophys. I really want something that will help me to improve my awareness of whats around me, and just my mental power in general. Im just looking at the moment, but is there one specific thing that you think I should look in to? Im open to all suggestions.

While I never delved very deeply into Taoism itself, I found the Tao Te Ching to be very helpful. It let me think in many ways that I hadn't before.

I'm bias towards Tao because it has psuhed me to a different realm of understanding. Also, I've read it 5 times and have read different translations interpretting it. I'd suggest going to a college library and finding books as they're a bit more scholarly compared to the commercial shit at Barnes N Noble that appeals to this society. Maybe that's just my interpretation but reading a book that translates, talks about what Tao was and became from a man who's a doctoral student in Asian studies from Harvard is a bit more reliable than Jermaine Lipsky, who just happens to take a translation of the daodejing and add his 2 cents.
If anything, pick up a biology book, and that'll be your best guide to tao or anywhere.
nature Seneca the stoic is very interesting too

I have to agree with the economist, even if you don't entirely live by the tao te ching, reading and thinking on it gives you a different perspective.

Read a user-friendly book on Buddhism.

I'm not very much into the Eastern Philosophies, I am more of a humanist/existentialist (fan of Hume and also Sarte), but I would probably be a Taoist if I went Eastern.
Just for the record, it's pronounced starting with a "D" sound even though it's written with a "T".

honestly, it doesn't matter. everyone knows what you're talking about tom-ay-toe tom-ah-toe.
Tao can't be defined so your bias is completely irrelevant. once you've considered something to be right then there must be a wrong. Tao, Dao.. that's just the way it is. sure in Chinese you'd annunciate the Duh, but that's bias and you wouldn't want to be bias would you?
look up Stoicism... read up Seneca

I've found the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism to be useful to me. I would highly recommend "the art of happiness" by the dalai Llama. It's co written by a pschologist, who's name I can't remember. I've also found the practice of Aikido to be very benficial to my being and awareness.

Do you practice Aikido too? Just curious.

I did Taijutsu for 2 years. It's or Aikido is derived from it.. either or. it has joint locks, throws... judo, aikido, juijutsu... it's japanese for unarmed combat.
I was playing hockey at the same time and it really helped me out there with using other people's momentum against them and me using the least bit of energy possible. And awareness, it greatly increased my awareness. Maybe it was the fluidity the way things had to be done because I took Taekwondo and there wasn't much turnover.

goto the book store or library and let a philosophy find you.
