 Vermont to Secede in 2008

What are your thoughts? I for one hope that they do secede and that more states follow suit. Instead of one giant country that sucks, maybe one of the 50 will practice true democracy and freedom.

I don't think the United States could use force to prevent the secession, if Vermont chose to do so. In my opinion, the federal government has taken far too much power away from the states, and they cannot continue to impede upon this. Medicinal marijuana is a great example.
I see no reason why we should continue to be the United States when clearly different states have different interests and different ways in which they wish to be governed. I'd love to see Vermont secede, in fact. It is their right if they choose to practice it.

I think it is perfectly ok as long as they understand that they will lose all federal funding. If they can do it without federal aid, then they should go for it.
One of the few problems that arises, is will any products coming from vermont be considered imports? will you need a passport to get in and out of vermont?

I realize that it had a great deal of importance in the secession over a century ago, but what does it have to do with this one? Is there an issue of moral importance comparative to slavery that the Dem's are on the wrong side of which will lead to Vermont seceding?
I'm not opposed to the demonizing of a political party, but I am opposed to dishonest debate.

I would suggest Vermont continue allowing its citizens to become soldiers of the U.S. army if they choose in order to continue its protection. The only real threat to vermont is the U.S. army, due to there position in the middle of the USA, no other country is going to be able to get as far as Vermont without permission of the USA, or a war. They can come to some kind of agreement to solve this problem, Vermont can continue to support the US army, despite the fact that it may contradict some of there goals, it would allow other goals to be put into place peacefully. The problem lies with the fact that if all the states seceded, would we be safe with 50 armies? How would we govern a singular army if we decided we wouldn't be safe as 50 seperate entities? And if we didn't have a singular army, would we really be in danger? Why can such small countries in Europe stay out the way of invasion with there small armies?
I'd say the answer is to get many states to threaten to secide after a few really do, and demand more power to the states and less federal government control in order to keep the U.S. as one.

For some reason I don't think the secessionist crowd and the gun owner crowd have all that much overlap. Call it a hunch.
Just as an aside, I'm not really sure hippies would be worth much as slaves if those Ben and Jerry jerkoffs are an example of Vermont hippies. And if they promise to take Howard Dean and entomb him in some Jabba the Hutt rockface for eternity maybe that awesome responsibility will get them immunity from attack. I'll have to think about it.
