Is it worth the hassle?

noooo you cant do it on air (over the radio) righteously. You gotta use 4 separate CD players... one on each side of you, like surround sound, then somehow hit Play on all 4 CD players at the exact same time. I've read that it's a very amazing experience, and that it can be considered a psychedelic drug on its own. It's been described as "4-D surreal soundscapes" and "walls of sound".

I've done it, using four separate "stereos". Two were portable CD players with portable speakers. But it was definitely worth it. A very trippy experience, in a Flaming Lips type of way. Each CD is rather fragmented, unlistenable on it's own, and although they come together beatifully, it's not like 4 complete tracks combining together. More like standing in the middle of the recording studio, on acid. And actually come to think of it, the different sound quality of the different "stereos" I used probably is kinda the point, like each listening experience is slightly different.
I am thinking about taking it to Bonnaroo this year and doing it with car stereos. Good idea?

Sees like it would kinda be a pain in the ass to get all 4 to start at exactly the same time. Kinda like trying to start Wizard of Oz and Dark side of the moon at the same exact time. I was never quite sure if I did it right, but I was really high, and it sure seemed pretty trippy!

Yeah, it sounds different every time you do it. You can turn down the drums and the vocals and just have some guitar, then turn everything way up etc. Works best if you have a small group of friends and everybody gets to be "dj" on one of the cd players. It's just fun and an awesome concept album in it's own right.

I lost one of the CDs though dammit. The liner notes are good too.

they have timecode reference points on the CD's themselves.

It will say CD 1,2,3,4 and then something like a tone that should line up from all four sources.
The biggest problem or advantage (depending on how you look at it) is that each CD player has different latency from hitting play to actually playing. Also, most players play at ever so slightly different speeds.
I remember that we had done it in this great big room with amazing acoustics and it was spot on with all 4 discs and by the end of it there was about a beat difference between some of the CD's.
So, the good side, is that each time you listen to it, it will be different.
But yeah, it is very worth it, IMO.
