Foam instead of verm
    #700753 - 06/25/02 03:31 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I was thinking last night...
Couldn't foam be used in place of a dry verm layer? I think it could provide some advantages over a loose verm layer. My reasoning is this... a dry verm layer is only useful if it remains undesterbed. If it has traped contams and you acidently desterb it you're screwed. So, if you have a 3/4 inch thick piece of foam cut slightly larger than the opening of your jar, wouldn't it be just as good or even better than a dry verm layer? Any thoughts/insights? I'm thinking of trying this with a few jars on my next experiment.

I would imagine that the foam would allow very very little air flow, resulting in very slow or even no mycelium growth at all. Maybe im wrong..?

I dont know. Maybe a thinner layer would be better, like 1/2" or 1/4". I'll try a few different thicknesses.
