50 dollars for a 50lb bag? That is why I don't buy Rye.
Petco sells some great Wild Bird Seed. 10 dollars for a 40lb bag. I believe Agar buys the same WBS brand. I dont remember the name of it.

Yes, it has to be rye grain not grass seed. Unless you're growing sclerotia forming varieties.
I got winter rye at the co-op feed store. It was $11.00 for a 50 lb bag.
You should be able to get rye berries or wheat berries at any health food store. If you absolutely can't get berries, use wild bird seed.

I had a lot of trouble locating the correct rye. What you are looking for has several names. Organic Whole Rye Seed, Whole Rye Berries, and I have heard more. If you are going to stick with rye, I suggest calling your local health food stores and using the name Rye Berries. If they don't recognize it try "rye seeds." The important thing is that you make sure it is organic. Don't be mistaken with Rye flour as my health food store ordered accidentally. Don't give up calling stores; I didn't find any one carying it until my 10th or so store. When you find it, you'll know you have it. Good luck.

I bought some of the same stuff from my local co-op. at about a dollar per pound wbs is a better value, but rye grass has been very fast to colonize. Right now i have six 4-quart bags and all of them have nice spawn points in under a week.
right now the co-op has to special order the rye berries and they are more expensive, so for now rye grass it is...

Lowes is the worst place to buy anything, especially rye grass seed. That's at least five times the price it should be.
Rye grass seed makes excellent spawn, but it's a bit harder to get the moisture just right. That's why I prefer rye berries, but rye grass seed works great.
I recently bought 10 pounds of rye grass seed for $2.50, so don't let Lowes rip you off. Go to any local nursery if that's what you're going to use.
I prefer rye berries because the size of the grains leaves just enough space between the grains to allow air to ciruclate, but not so much that your jar is full of wasted space, such as with popcorn. I buy 25 pound bags of organic rye berries for $8.75 in a large city, so it's certainly available. RR

Up until quite recently(Just a few grows ago) I could NEVER get good results with bird seed, and was paying the organic hippie store to special order me 50 lb bags of rye for like 38 bucks .. After figuring out what my problem was(Incorrect pressure cooking, thanks Agar ) It has been that same old 8 buck bag of bird basics for me with stellar results
