jar question.... both are 1/2 pint but.....
    #699843 - 06/25/02 07:35 AM (21 years, 9 months ago)

ok as you see i am new... anyway i have 1/2 pints 2 kinds...wide mouth 1/2 pints and the Tapered 1/2 pints. what is the difference other than the wide mouths are really really wide, so they aren?t as tall, they both are wider at the top. so which ones are better to use? any help would be appreciated.

There is 1/2 pint Tall and 1/2 wide-mouth (which are shorter and wider) Both are the equal amount of volume. However, IMO the wide mouths colonize faster because there is more 'surface' area then the taller ones. I've had great success with both tho but I like the wide mouths because they are 'smaller'.

I've used both too. And like goolag said the shorter ones did colonize faster. However I like the tall ones better because I can fit 10 jars in my fish tank. With the short ones I can only fit 6.

Two containers of equal volume have the same internal surface area!

One compelling reason to go with the wide-mouths is that they'll produce cakes with a wider base which adds stability when they're birthing (if you're not casing).

Is this so?
I think you are inventing new math here....

hmm.... i don?t know........the surface area of the jars should be the same but if you mean surface area of the cakes.... then i?m not sure becuase the widemouth seems like it would have more area on that side...... hmmmmm now i think about it out loud as i write i?m thinking they all have the same surface area no matter what!
hmmmm.....something to think about.......

Let?s take 2 cylinders.
The first has a radus of 1 inch, and a height of 5 inches.
The volume of this cylinder is 1^2 *PI * 5 = 15,708 cubic inches.
It?s inner surface is 2*1*PI*5 + 2*1^2*PI = 37,699 square inches.

The second has double that radius, 2 inches, but it?s only 1.25 inches high.

The volume of this cylinder is 2^2 *PI * 1.25 = 15,708 cubic inches.
It?s inner surface is 2*2*PI*1.25 + 2*2^2*PI = 40.841 square inches.

If you are using the pf double ended casing tek. then ultimately the skinny ones will have more surface area. But on the downside they wont be able to absorb as much water thought the casing.

I like to use wide mouth jars because the cake just slides out when colonized.

ok my 2 cents worth.

I have used both.

the wide mouth jars do colonize faster without a doubt.
I also believe that the wide mouth jars colonizing so much faster, might cut down on a few contams....which can be a real plus too.

but.... the tall 1/2 pints have fruited better for me.....as cakes.
they do take up less space in a fruiting chamber....which can be benificial if you don't want to lose precious space.

now if you are using these for casing.....there shouldn't be much difference.
except the time element.....wide mouths are faster!

good luck!

Anno, you forget that there are some Americans that finish 12 years of school and still cannot read English (Or any other language for that matter)!
