For my first grow I bought a cooler and an ultrasonic humidifier. It was a big pain in the ass so now I use a rubbermaid with perlite also. No more timers, humidifiers, or head aches.

My rubbermaid is 15 gallons. I cut a hole in the lid and taped clear plastic over it. I use casings so I don't know how many cakes you can fit in there. I would guess about 12-15. I can fit two fairly large casings in there with no problems.

when people use the rubbermaid/perlite
how much perlite do you put in the bottom of the container?
and
then do you just set the casing right on top of the perlite?

You wet the perlite, drain it and then put enough at the bottom to cover the whole bottom and it should be about an inch deep. I've read to put the cakes on top of tinfoil on top of the perlite, and I've also read you can put the cakes directly on the perlite.

Place your cakes on tin foil but put them directly on the perlite after the first flush so the cake can wick up some moisture. I also put a little hydrogen peroxide (h202) in the perlite to help with contams.

using a styrefoam cooler is bad.....IMO
if you get any contams....your gonna have a hard time getting rid of contams.
I have read several accounts of people not being able to get rid of the contams in there styrefoam fruiting chambers.
I believe that the styrefoam surface have pores in it..... that make it very difficult to get all the contams out.....once they get in.
If your using styrefoam coolers to save money..... you might lose everything..... which will cost you more in the long run.
my 2 cents.

I agree with what Roadkill said. Styrofoam does work pretty well as a fruiting TRAY, but for the same reasons as above not often more than one time. One benefit of styrofoam as a chamber though, is that because it insulates better you get less condensation on the walls/lid at higher rH. This might not be important if you have a perlite layer or other method to sop it up. Depending on the size you want, just about anything can be made to work well. For 3-4 bread loaf pan sized trays, I'd go rubbermaid. They're easier to modify, cheap, easy to clean [not porous]. Wet perlite certainly does the job, I don't like it because it's a bitch to clean, and *should* be cleaned occasionally as spores/debris build up. That's the trade off, IMO. Wet perlite was a great innovation, kudos to whoever came up with that one [PF?]. One thing I've seen that I thought was pretty cool is putting wet perlite in trays on the bottom, then putting the fruiting trays overtop, leaving air spaces for the perlite to do its job. Between the perlite trays you can stick an air input of some kind. By varying the number of trays you can somewhat regulate the rH.
Many, many options. . .
