All murderers in Iran will now have to pay the same "blood money" if they want to avoid execution, regardless of their victim's religion, a government source said.

However, the penalty for killing a woman will remain half that for a man.

At present the dieh - or blood money - is set at $20,000 for killing a Muslim man, and half that for the murder of a Jew, a Christian or a Zoroastrian.

The decision to hike the price for religious minorities, which has to be approved by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, came after the representatives of Iran's non-Muslim communities protested at the "discrimination."
