So when you dunk the cakes is a bleach/vinegar/water mixture recommended or just sterilized water? Why doesn't the bleach/vinegar kill the mycelium? Thank you

I have read all the FAQ in the shroomery and myocopatia and nothing makes mention of bleach/vinegar. It seems counterintuitive to me but then again I am a rookie so HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, if you try a 1 part bleach 50 parts water solution it will be too strong and that will kill your mycelium. The 100 parts water, 2 parts vinegar and 1 part bleach (the strongest usable solution) is strong enough to help kill contams, but not so strong that it will kill the mycelium. I don't know why mycelium and the contaminants have different tolerance levels. Maybe someone else knows the answer to this.

About which to use; I guess if you feel uncomfortable using bleach, just use sterilized water. I haven't had any problems with the bleach solution though I use casings and just mist with it.

Doesn't an acidic environment promote the growth of contams such as trich? I would omit the vinegar .. personally I dont see where the bleach comes in but I don't work with cakes either.

the bleach is very alkaline, so the vinegar just balances the ph towards neutral, it doesn't make it acidic.
your best bet is to just dunk in regular water, then follow the dunk with a brief [10 minute] dip in the bleach sanitizer.
