Apparently? I'll take medical research of your gut feeling...

http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs104/en/

Like the common cold, [tuberculosis] spreads through the air. When infectious people cough, sneeze, talk or spit, they propel TB germs, known as bacilli, into the air. A person needs only to inhale a small number of these to be infected. Each person with active TB disease will infect on average between 10 and 15 people every year.

http://www.cdc.gov/tb/pubs/tbfactsheets/xdrtb.htm

Drug-susceptible (regular) TB and XDR TB are spread the same way. TB germs are put into the air when a person with TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, speaks, or sings. These germs can float in the air for several hours, depending on the environment. Persons who breathe in the air containing these TB germs can become infected.

http://www.who.int/tb/xdr/faqs/en/index.html

The risk of becoming infected increases the longer the time that a previously uninfected person spends in the same room as the infectious case. The risk of spread increases where there is a high concentration of TB bacteria, such as can occur in closed environments like overcrowded houses, hospitals or prisons.

Several countries with good TB control programmes have shown that cure is possible for up to 30% of affected people. (In other words, in developed countries it has a 70% fatality rate.)

TB patients in developed countries have a 70% mortality rate? You better tell the CDC that....

Estimates of TB deaths for 1990 were derived using 1) published case-fatality rates of 7% for industrialized countries ...

Anyway, I really don't have a problem with this guy up until, like Economist pointed out, he found out that he had a basically unkillable strain and was asked to seek treatment.

I'm sorry, all of the news reports quoting the doctors directly involved with this man all stated that there was a low amount of risk. He hasn't even been coughing. Overreaction yes this all has been.

I heard another rumor that the guy's family had all been given a secret vaccination to the extreme strain- a perk of having a family member on the CDC's TB task force, I guess. The goverment intends to misuse the deadly strain and so wants it kept secret, which is why the young man feared he would never walk away from that Italian "isolation".

Yeah, that's precisely why they didn't ensure he couldn't get back in when they knew he was there trying to cross the border.

Your rumors suck.
