people who grow - do you enjoy growing shrooms or taking shrooms more?
its a hard call for me. i think i enjoy growing them more though. i like the mad scientist-ness of it all. i enjoy taking them, but i know i would enjoy them alot less if i had to pay for them by the 1/8

Yea i love to grow them but i also love to eat em'.I hate waiting for the jars to colonize and start to pin but I like the fruting stage of growin, who doesnt? So Id say both equally for me.

im hoping to get a lot of fun out of growing them.. ill be starting here very soon, just picked a lot of supplies up cheap as hell at a discount store.
got my incubator pretty much done, just need a fish tank heater and thermometer.. these two 16 gallon storage bins for 6$.. and this nice 16 quart pot to take the place of a pressure cooker for like 8$

My jars colonized just fine w/o an incubator in a room at around 73F.Im sure itll reduce colonization time a bit though.I also found that steam sterilizing in a boiling pot of water works fine if you boil long enough at a slow boil.

it definitely colonizes faster if incubated
and harvesting is the BEST but waiting for them to dry sucks

yeah i was about to say you dont really need an incubator except for the winter.
just keep in the top shelf of a closet. my popcorn is doing MUCH better since i quit using my incubator. i had a TiT. now they have been made into two FC's =)
i could sell you a 100 watt fish tank heater!

how much are those things? i was just going to pick one up when i got the vermiculite next week.
im making a TiT as well and hopefully will be upgrading in the near future.. but my FC will probably be a 10-20 gallon fish tank with some flouros set up
sound alright?

10 gal. is good depending on how many jars u plan on colonizing. Ive got 5 in a 10 gal with a 3 inch layer of perlite and a PF style lid.

yeah see i plan on doing 12 jars at a time, thats the plan atleast.. im thinking a 20 gallon tank with a 2 inch layer of perlite.
for the lid i was going to make something by hand, involving plexi-glass and attaching a light to it... still havent decided what kind of light ill use, prolly just a basic flouro.

Btw,youll most likely only need one flouro, although flouros arent completely necessary as long as the cakes get some indirect light, I prefer indirect sunlight coming mostly from the top of my terrarium.(Its underneath a window with a blind)

thats the plan right now.
id rather have a light so i can regulate the exact amount of light the cakes get and chart my results. that way i can determine optimal conditions.

Id go with the 20 gal then and a 2 inch layer should do fine.Any airtight lid should work as long as it lets some light through. As for the light source thats ur call but natural sunlight works good IMO.

yeah the light will more than likely be mounted on the inside of the tank therefor it will be airtight and be able to keep the humidity level up.. which reminds me i need a multi-function thermometer for inside the FC

That might create heat problems and its gonna be pretty humid inside there. It'll be fine if u rest a flourescent strip light across the top of the tank over the lid.(doesnt give off much heat)

The best fruting temp is 86 F ,but any warm room temperature is fine as long as it doesnt get much hotter than that.Yea,You want 100% humidity ,but u dont want ur light inside the humid enviroment. The high humidity and dew drops are def bad for the light and can be dangerous.

I just let it fluctuate a little.Where im at it stays mostly the same all day and goes down a little at night.I think thats ok that my temps arent always constant, just like in nature. But if u want steady, optimal conditions then id get some kind of heating pad or somethin of the sort with a digital temp control maybe?

yeah and with an airtight lid it should retain heat pretty well.. if i get bored i might put some tint on the glass of the tank, that might help as well.

are you growing contam? the substrate alone will bring up the temp at least 5 degrees 90+ degrees fruiting????
I actually enjoy growing more then eating I love achieving higher and higher BE I challenge myself to do so
After picking so many shrooms from hpoo I kind of lost my apetite for them... I ate them only 3x all of 2006 and I am yet to try some for 2007... I just may have to make a tea lol

No im growing ecuadors at the moment and 86F is proven to be the optimal fruiting temp and thermal death occurs at 120F.Lately my fc has been at 80-84F.(no digi thermometer)

I dont know where you got thermal death being 120F, BUT Stamets states thermal death at 106F for cubes during spawn run (could you quote your source?)
In the cultivating forum it is said that 74-77 is best fruiting temp for cubes... and if your substrate is deeper prob even less temp
I remember reading a post in which agar says he keeps fruiting temp at 70
Can somebody else chime in with an opinion

I def remember reading that it was proven psilocybe cubensis fruits best at 86F,not 100% about the thermal death now that u mention it though.

hmmm well if you always have growing in everystage going on granted you keep up with it you should be harvesting shrooms all the time once you get into a cycle. Constantly making sure you have no down time. (this would mean you have multiple projects always going on)

oh really?
I guess I gotta eat my words
I ordered his video...
IME 74-77 is best and at lower temps more pins are intiated if you shoot your substrate with a heat gun it will be 5-10 degrees higher then surrounding temp (read an agar post) so I guess its about 80 or so...
sorry for hijacking
