A question about the Oyster mushroom
    #6978783 - 05/28/07 06:36 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

I have a friend who works for an organic green house. They are growing Brandywine Tomatoes and Cherokee Purple Tomatoes.

There is a mushroom contamination ( We believe it to be Oysters) on their Jiffy pots. My friend asked me to look into weather or not these shrooms could harm the tomato plant itself, or will they just take away moisture from the plant?

I believe that most of their nutes are coming from the cardboard Jiffy pots.

The spores came from some 2 year old peat moss that had all kinds of stuff already growing on it.

Is there any way that the Oyster could feed off the root-system of the tomato plants. I think my friend said the root system of these tomatoes were fibrous, and was concerned about the mushrooms harming the plant.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just the opposite. The mushroom mycelium feeds on dead organic matter, so it will break that down and make it available to the plant roots as nutrients. Fungi in the soil is beneficial to plants.

Sweet.......thanks for the quick reply.

So there is no threat of them feeding on the root system?
