Casing+Substrate rehydration.

Probably has been asked a few times, but can't find anything.

So, dunking for 24h seems the obvious way to go around re-hydrating a colonized substrate, but what happens if the substrate is too big to take out and sink in water.

I have read a couple of posts of people pouring water along the edges and then pouring the excess out a few hours later, but is there any other systems, such as injecting sterile water into the substrate or something similar?

Would adding a nice humid extra casing layer ontop help?

4-6 hours is long enough to rehydrate a casing.
24 hours is only recomended for cakes.

fill the tray with water, cover and leave for 4-6 hours.
when it's hydrated, run fresh water into the side straight from the tap
in order to flush out loose material and any nasties.
hold a piece of foil in place on top, and tip over to drain off the excess water.
