Can spores inocculate and living lung tissue?
    #6965642 - 05/25/07 12:49 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

Or would the mucous membrane kill it? it seems lung tissue would be warm moist and fertile

lol...in what i had read they don't inoculate living tissue (i.e your lungs) but they can cause problems with your lungs in excess (talking about normal spores cubes, pans ports etc etc) they can make it hard to breath, flair up some allergy's,and then if the lungs or sinus's get infected you have to go get them cleaned which is uncomfy as hell because with your sinus's they scrape em mostly clean and give you an antibiotic.

No, your body will fight it off. But, there is mushroom workers lung. Its, in The Mushroom Cutavier.Pg#?

unless you know the reason of why not dont be a smart ass. I know its nothing to be uber concerned about but im just wondering why mycelium cannot colonize lung tissue if it can colonize a bible?

We are living and paper is dead! Its like being worried a vultures will eat you before you die! Besides your temp can go over 100 without kill you shrooms cant do that. You have Flem and hairs to catch the spores and snot too! Your body has an immune system too. Didn't we all take grade 9 science class about systems?

Medical student here.

a) It is pretty hard for spores to get into your lungs. We have sticky surfaces all over our airways designed to act as fly paper and the flow of air is slightly turbulent so stuff gets swirled around and onto the walls, and expelled with our mucus. Spores are relatively big things, not small like tar molecules that get to our lungs, so the percentage of spores that make it to the lungs is probably very very small (but if exposed to a big enough number, some will get through.

even if a spore did make it to the lungs

b) We have an inmune system. It's mission is to kill off all kind of foreign objects in the lungs. It happens slower than you think, as the foreign object has to encapsulate first and then be destroyed by fagocytes. It is this intense inmune activity that causes the inflamation of the lung tissue known as mushroom growers lung/farmers lung and all the other hundreds of alveolitis caused by inhalation of fungal spores.

C) A mycologist will have to confirm this last part, but if I recall correctly fungal beings live on dead matter and feed by secreting "digestive juices" onto the substrate and then absorbing the nutrients that have been broken down. That is part of the decay/putrefaction cycle. Our lung structure and cells have defences against these mechanisms, and also, the temperature isn't really ideal either.

So even if a spore could germinate and find another spore to join with and breed (highly unlikely) the conditions aren't the most favourable for that mycelium to survive. And cubensis lives on decaying plant matter anyways, not animal.

I know it's a pity but you won't have shrooms growing out of your throat any time soon.

ask RR about breathing in too many mushroom spores.

You can definitely get sick from inhaling spores, especially molds.

Healthy people have an immune system that can fight off invaders, however there have been cases where those infected with HIV/AIDS have had trichoderma and mucor actually growing inside their lungs. This was not from mushroom growing, but from building contaminants.

I was sick once with the flu, and had a crop of Hipsizygus ulmarius that was ready to harvest, but I was too sick to mess with it. The massive spore drop in my mini-greenhouse, which was in my bedroom at the time, almost sent me to the hospital, or worse. My lungs filled up with spores and I was coughing them up. I also developed an allergy to them, and to this day I can't tolerate the spores of that species. I had to completely stop growing them.

The important thing is to get rid of moldy substrates immediately upon noticing them, and to harvest mushroom crops prior to spore drop. Never take a whiff of a moldy jar, or you'll be snorting possibly dangerous spores.

Half the wierd ilnesses you see in House are fungal.

Human fungal illnesses are mostly opportunistic i.e. attacking people with no immune system, as the examples RR quoted.

The other case is the allergy as RR has, which is quite common, especially after getting a lungfull of spores. But you'd get a similar allergy from breathing in pollen for example.

So don't worry about spores but use your common sense. The same as you wouldn't walk into a really dusty room and take a deep breath, don't do the same in a room full of spores, or you might end up in hospital trying to explain to a doctor how you got a lungfull of cubensis spores, lol

lets show a picture of your AC unit...

with the results of the massive spore load...

it was pretty bad...

imagine breathing all that in!~

Do bacterial contaminations carry any risk, like molds do?

Shouldn't...or at least I've never heard of it.

You're creating a uniquely happy environment for molds, which always has the potential to brew some unusual stuff. Bacterium will be of the sort you always find in rotting food, and not airborne. I wouldn't eat the shit, but I doubt it'd be toxic.

Blirska...wtf?

Ooops! I misread the post before mine. Never mind it. As was said, bacterias can't fly and they don't really release airborn toxins as some molds do.
