Brainwashed against mushrooms as a kid?
    #6972409 -

I remember back when i was in grade school, we had a cop come in and give us an anti-drug demonstration.

He talked about all sorts of drugs and he talked about magic mushrooms and i still remember what kinda shit he was saying it was like: "Magic Mushrooms make you see things that are not there and those things will terrify you. Some people will se a lion run and attack them and bite them and they feel it so it was very painful. He also said one man ran screaming out of a theater and went home and scratched all of his skin on his face off, so his face looked like a piece of hamburger meat.

What propaganda!!! He was even like "If you take magic mushrooms, you WILL see spiders all over the place, biting at you"

Do you guys have any storys of being brainwashed or attemped brainwash ?

Yeah. I remember in elementary school (Im 27) the police brought the sample briefcase, with a whole collection of illicit drugs framed inside. They were like "If you see any of these, tell your teacher or councelor (sp?).". Then there was the "Just say No" and later the "D.A.R.E." programs, all aimed at shoving propaganda into childrens faces. Little did they know these activities underestimate the intelligence of a young child. And in many cases (such as mine) can actually offend them with how blatantly biased and irrational their explanation is. Its funny how people so easily forget what it was like to be a child...sad really. It shows how detatched they are from the innocence of life.

My favorites are weeping willows, which aren't really weeping at all. They're very wispy, witty and will dance in the breeze with you. Nothing like a tree that wants to dance with you. Although it doesn't like its thin limbs being pulled at all, it absolutely LOVES it when you walk through them, letting them gently slide over your face and shoulders. If you're naked, the willow considers it to be sex. It will orgasm on your mind and you will blow dream chunks into outer space. All very fun until your neighbor sees you.                                    -The Joekenorer

The only drug I remember being taught about is LSD and how it can cause you to "see things that aren't there", "experience time going slow" and "see sounds or smell colours". I think that day sparked my initial interest in psychedelics. Before that, I had no interest in drugs whatsoever.

(though I've still never had LSD)

I remember being taught that halucinogens were scary and made you go insane. And the way they put it, if you were to do a halucinogen, you'd geek out and most likely wind up insane. That was what I thought. Education?

When I was around 6-7 my mom tried to scare me and say

"pyschedelics make you go crazy!"

"Why? What do you mean crazy?"

"You see things that aren't there, like spiders crawling up walls and your face! Don't do them!"

So here I am, 7 years old, aware of Dungeons and Dragons, my favorite books are medical books, I LOVED death as a child, adn that is a scare tactic!? Spiders! Telling a kid about pyschedelics with a strong imagination is like telling him "Yes, Billy, all that stuff in your head is real, and there is a way to experience it!"

Uh oh.

I have boring names.

I just remember the DARE officer leaving a snitch box in the class, so that anyone could report drug use to the police this way (in 5th grade this was). One girl actually used it, after hearing about all of the terrible effects of marijuana, she became terrified for some friend that she knew who apparently used it, and turned the person in. Basically it's just a way to get kids to rat on their pot smoking parents.

Then sometime in middle school the DARE officer came to a class, and all I really remember is how he scared the shit out of everyone by making a fake gun with his hands, aiming it at a student and going "BANG BANG! Double tap to the head. And you're dead. That's what happens if the police think you're a threat." Or something to that effect. I think we were around 12-13 years old at that time. No wonder I've come to hate cops.

That's pretty fucking sick.

My favorite tradition in DARE literature is how they say pot "causes brain damage and memory loss" like they're related. They got pot to damage the brain of a rehsus monkey by suffocating it with smoke for like five minutes, and apparently this brain damage, caused only by the most obscene and artificial exposure, causes the memory loss.

The only way you will become lazy and unmotivated by smoking pot is if you already are a lazy and unmotivated person. This is the case for all the 'burned out potheads' I know.

DARE sucked a lot. It was the year I found out my dad smoked weed, and I was so freaked out about it. Weed according to them makes you pretty stupid. I never remember any discussion on mushrooms or acid. Generally most time was spent on weed, inhalants, and even though drugs might look like candy they aren't. They would hold up a bag of pills and ask us if it was candy or not, and everyone usually guessed wrong.

i'm lazy and unmotivated when theres nothing to do or be motivated about. when theres stuff to be done - weed only makes it better.
ie: smoke a bowl then cut the grass for an hour of uninterrupted fun.

i wouldn't want to do that sober, i'm lazy. lol.

on the topic:
i remember a 5th grade DARE program i had. i still have the shirt. its one of the most comfortable shirts i own and i smoke in it regularly. THANKS DARE!

all i had to do for it was write an essay about my thoughts on drug abuse. in other words i told them how I thought what people do is their own business and i wouldn't rat someone out for the choices they make unless it was going to cause A REAL PROBLEM. ie: not a bunch of invisible spiders. I believe in a free country (but don't harm others =).

side note: you'll see spiders? you pussies. scare the kids with rapists and terrrrrrrists. teach them to judge people by their appearances. (extreme sarcasm)

hahaha. this just popped into my head.

It's always funny when I hear that "pot makes you lazy". My personal experience is that the peak of my pot usage was also the four weeks leading up to my university final year project deadline. I got more work done in those four weeks than ever before.

Needless to say, pot doesn't make you lazy.

I can't really remember much about the anti-drug propaganda .. (I used to hate them lessons .. so horseshit).

The woman who taught us said she'd done speed once when her doctor prescribed it so she could loose weight .. said she was climbing the walls for 3 days (if you've ever done lots of speed or seen requiem for a dream .. its true).

Another time she got 2 ex smack heads to come in .. and they were telling us about how it ruined their lives and if they need to draw blood they have to get it from the heart... blah blah.

A lot of the propaganda was about inhalants (deodourants / glues etc) and the dangers of lugging that shit.

The bit on psychedelics always focused on the bad trips and how people jumped off buildings thinking they could fly etc.

Oh and they always used this stupid assed story of some dumb fuck girl who drank a shit ton of water while on ecstasy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leah_Betts

After all this flagrant propaganda I thought to myself  "I'm never going to do drugs, its fucking stupid." Now some years later I do my best to educate the masses and undo the brainwashing created by said propaganda. I do drugs on a somewhat regular basis and they are an integral part of my life. I would not change any of the experiences I've had, If I could live my life the same, the only thing I would do different is question "authority" more.

What annoys me is how deeply rooted in our current culture all this goddamn propaganda is. Theres a distinct lack of educated drug users; as if it was some sort of stigma to be avoided. One of my lecturers the other day was talking about stereotypes and how I looked like a druggie (while being the most articulate and intelligent person in the class; I constantly debate his narcissistic views). This annoyed me, not because its true, but because of the negative connotations associated with that stereotype.

Goddamn social conditioning. If everyone realised they were users drugs regardless (and have been for thousands of years), and just how bad their drug of choice really was [alcohol] society might actually reform these conservative laws.

The entire drug war is fueled by pernicious fallacies, based entirely on media sensationalism and fundamentalist views.

What we need is more people in respected places publishing peer reviewed articles on the real effects of the aforementioned inebriants. :crankey:

I can remember back around the early 70's we had a discussion about drugs. Our teacher told us that if you dip the point of a pin into LSD and then dip that pin into a glass of water and drink it, it WILL kill you. I'm not sure how he came up with that. We also had a teacher tell us about a concert that he went to where they passed around a jug of water, he drank some and could see through his eyelids for the rest of the night, said he didn't know it was laced with acid..He said he couldn't get to sleep all night because he could see through his eyelids and through the walls.

Outright lies in schoolbooks, such as that marijuana is 20 times more unhealthy than cigarettes.

In 8th grade (14 years old) a class mate told the teacher he smoked weed and how it was awesome, and she told him something like "You're lost, it's practically over for you soon".

And of course always being surrounded by the mentality that "if it's psychoactive, it's bad", and "hallucinating always means brain damage".

Well, how about the one "Lying is bad"? How about that one fuckers?

Re: Brainwashed against mushrooms as a kid? [Re: ROX]

The big problem with the drug propaganda as kids is that they teach us a million lies to keep us away from drugs:

- Pot makes you stupid and you will probably die if you smoke it because it usually has rat poison in it

- Magic mushrooms make you see violent animals and makes you think they are attacking you

- LSD does the same thing as mushrooms

- Ecstacy is always laced with poison

- One hit of cocaine has a 50% chance of instant death

- It is impossible to quit heroin once you're hooked

which are all lies i have heard from school, cops etc.

Now, once the kids smoke pot for the first time and realize that what they were told about it was a lie, they begin to question what they were told about drugs. Someone does mushrooms and finds out that they never see any violent animals who are trying to kill them so they begin to wonder if there is anything bad about drugs at all... and then you get heroin addics and wonder what you did wrong to the kids for them to end up that way.

If only they told us the truth: Pot will not hurt you, mushrooms and LSD probably won't hurt you as long as you wait till you're old enough to try them, but drugs like cocaine and heroin WILL hurt you and ARE incredibly bad for you. If they had told us the truth from the beginning, alot of people would not be habitual drug users today.

Fuckin idiots, i just want to move to a country where drug use is tolerated so i know i'm not going to have gov't propaganda about drug use shoved down my throat and my children's (when i have them) throats. I wish hallucinogens were viewed with respect and viewed as tools of self-discovery and mind-exploration and not the horrible ominous title "a drug".

If they don't just flat-out tell you that psychedelics make you go crazy they love to go on about tremors, nausea, anxiety, paranoia, a feeling of impending death, etc. like they're a typical part of the experience. Granted, shrooms fuck with my stomach pretty bad, but I've never had any of that other crap.

My friend had an aunt, I believe(could have been a cousin). It was a non formal get together, and we were on the subject of intelligence and being a responsible person. She's always impressed with me. This time, she was talking to his younger brother about staying away from drugs. She used me an example of why to stay away.

"See, he has an IQ of 160, and he's been at the top of his class his whole life. Honors everything. He joined the Marines at 18, and now is a successful supervisor inspector for the utilities with a nice home and wife. If you want to end up like him, you better stay off drugs".

I later pulled her aside and blew her mind.

These stories are hilarious.
Although its sad.

I live a few miles from Amsterdam and my drug education was honest luckily.
The education was given by people from a rehab center, most of them had used drugs themselves.

They put a lot of emphasis on responsible, safe use. They actually said shrooms can have really positive effects if used in a responsible way.
And how xtc will not harm you if you don't use more than once every 6-8 weeks. But they also told us about the possible negative effects if you abuse it.

Afterwards we went to a police station where a heroin addict talked to us about how his life had gone downhill since he started using. And told us it is extremely difficult to get off that shit if you've lost everything you have, while having no hope whatsoever.

So afterwards everyone was like: well, Im never going to touch heroin. And speed or cocaine could get kinda nasty too. But experimenting a bit with weed or shrooms should be ok.

I'm a firm believer and advocate of harm reduction, its the way to go... unfortuanetly we in the good ol usa would rather predispose our citizens to a general lack of responsibility and give them far less credit then they deserve.

You're definitely a sharp one. Much sharper than I was.

When I was in school in Canada we had some drug education that was pre-high school, and most of it was classifying drugs in general as 'bad', and including only long-term health problems and not differentiating between hard and soft drugs. Psychedelics, disassociates, hallucinogens in general were all grouped in one giant mush-slurry with things like amphetamines and barbiturates. None of the upsides were mentioned, and none of the long term health benefits were mentioned (naturally, I suppose).

It wasn't until I did my own research and respected myself and the substances enough that I got a clear view of what they truly are and can be used for. Ever since I've never had my trust in the government been so shaken, and never before had I felt so lied to and mentally violated.

Now I feel... liberated. Because although tacky to say so, knowledge is indeed power.
