HUGE ASS RUBBERMAID! 54 gal *PICS UPDATE
    #6970985 - 05/26/07 08:53 PM (16 years, 8 months ago)

I just got a rubbermaid today at Home Depot its 54 gallons, 3 ft 6.7 in x 1 ft 9.4 in x 1 ft 6 in

It don't sound big to me and it didn't seem to big at Home Depot but man once I got it home and set it on the floor and compared it to the size of the room, I was amazed! I just sat there on the couch for 15 minutes staring at it imagining the forest of shrooms it will some day take part in creating for me to enjoy long into my 70's!

I have tried to figure out the precise Square Feet there are in it and can only come up with a ruff guess of somewhere around 10sq FT  math is not my strong point!

Maybe one of you kind intelligent people can give me a better idea of what I'm dealing with. I have one now and plan to get 3 more. I'm in the process of deciding how many bricks of coir I'm going to be placing in this monster!

lol, I havent had spores in almost a year. I made a LC about a year ago and have been using generations of it ever since. I will be using a coolmist and a propeller style thingy, Linke in my closet setup.

I have 4 gallons of spawn at the moment. and 12 bricks of coir.

And heres a hint. If you can find these things, they make the best jars for preparing spawn!

BTW Thanks for posting the link to that grow. It gives me a good idea of how much of what I need to use.

Smart move...;)

If its the same size as mine it should take about 50 quarts to fill up to 4-5 inch sub depth.

I would have replied sooner but I was the winner of the weekly ban lottery. It fucking sucked! I have never entered before so I figured If I did I wouldn't win. I really could have used some advice to.

Anyway. I made up one of these HUGE ASS TUBS with Coir, Coffee & Poo-water to 5in depth. It took about 7 blocks of coir for a 5 inch layer. Its a very even layer to because I used 6 5in PVC pipes stuck in it to make sure. It seems like a small amount of Coir but I think its because I used allot of spawn.

I got nifty with the spawn. I used 4 colonized 6qt Coir+Poo-Water sweater boxes as spawn along with Around 21qts of wbs/CC

All together thats 45qts of spawn!
EDIT: after thinking about it the sweater boxes were not holding a full 6qts of spawn so im thinking its more along the lines of 30qts of spawn

This bad baby is colonizing very nicely. I'd say its already above 60%

I'm working on plans for something to house 4 tubs, the humidifiers and the light. Its going to be pretty cool when Its done!

I know the substrate looks uneven but thats the bag inside making the shadow do that. As you can see its colonizing very nice!

I did some quick math and there is around 72qts of fuel in that tub for the mushroom to eat. I'm working on getting a scale to weigh the whole think so I can post total weight,

Any guesses on what the yields are going to be? Closest to the dry weight without going over will get some free prints!

I have been doing allot of thinking on the issue of side pinning but still haven't decided on what I'm going to do about it. Maybe i will hold off on getting the second tub going and use it as a light shield by setting the one tub into it.

Im going to see how much reflective tape it will take Tuesday.

EDIT: BTW im not keeping the tub next to the window. I dragged it over there so I could take the pics with my shitty camera. Its in a pretty dark area.

I plan to!

I can't freaking wait to see the results myself.

how long did it take to make all the sub etc for that thing?

I am contemplating on moving to these big ass tubs too...

The sub took about a days work, the spawn was another days work. But with a better PC (mine only does three 1qt jars at a time) it could go allot faster. Give me a day or two and I'll post the way I do my coir. With pics.

hey man, why use the plastic sheet over the top..I mean you are using a tub, if you had just popped the lid on and kept it in the dark it would stay really near 100%RH?

Thats to keep the c02 Trapped if your talking about the white plastic. Without it my sub would prolly start to pin. It has some small slits over it to allow for some gas exchange... Its a fine balance.

Looking good. The tub color seems a little light though, might want to put some dark black duck tape around sides to avoid side fruiting, unless you don't mind that...

I know, I have been thinking allot on this but at the moment while the sub is colonizing its in a almost pitch black place. I still have some time to think about adding something for light shielding.

As I said previously:

Hey bTW i saw you posted sometihng about running your coolmist on a timer to turn on 15 minutes 3 times a day. If you want optimal results you want a lot more FAE than that. RR recommends a few times within the hour! So you can imagine how much fresh air those mushies need. 2 minutes on every 15-20 minutes would be better.

I'm still confused. I asked and some one answered but I still can't find were you stated how much you were running your coolmist in your BAT Grow (Big Ass Tub Grow :smirk:) If you could clear that up for my I would really appreciate it.

I'm kinda tired so if I missed any questions please point this out to me.

But I really think thins is the best option for going bulk if your sterile techniques are really good. Sure you can get these yields from a Martha. But its allot of work getting all those individual casings ready. Of course the advantage to a Martha and having all your substrate spread out among many different containers is that if something goes wrong your prolly not going to loose everything. But like I said. If you have been working or your sterile techniques and are not getting hardly any of your casings lost to contams, then baby thins is the end all way to go bulk IMHO.

At the beginning I was running the cool mist for 24/7. Then I went to Lowes and picked up 2 digital Timers which have 14 on/off switches per day. I put them to run 1 1/2 hours on and 30 minutes off(by functioning both timers as one unit), just so the cool mist could take a break to breath and cool down the engines every 2 hours.

More Idealy would have been to buy 3 timers to make it turn 30 minutes on 30 minutes off.

Or if you have enough money (Im buying one this month, was saving up the money for this one) you can buy one of these.
http://www.littlegreenhouse.com/accessory/controls2.shtml

This way you can have it turn on several times within the hour in maybe 2 minute intervals. yhis would be the ideal FAE control, with several shorth air circulation within the hour.

Good luck hombre....

I have more times that I know what to do with. I have a few that have 15 minute pins. Basicly if I left one up one down all the way around the time it would run for 15min and stay off for 15min.

Well I have some bad news. Today I checked on the casing and we have a few spots of green. My guess is that the substrate has been overheating a little bit. I'm going to do some surgery on it but I have never had very much luck fixing these sort of things once they happen.

I'm going to hope for the best but I'm very upset at the moment and may just end up throwing the tub and all out the fucking window.

Like I previously stated. This is the main risk of this kind of grow. If one casing goes bad you lose allot of work all in one big disaster.
