tub tek/ coir question.
    #6968168 -

hey, as most of you guys know(from my previous post) I have some rye jars that are about ready.

I'm about to spawn them to a substrait of coir, coffee, and gysum mixed (9 parts, 1 part, 1 part) then case it with a 50/50 of peat and verm.

I have a greenhouse set up (for some other stuff) that would suffice but I was thinking about doing a tub tek for the ease it offers.

has anyone spawned to coir in a tub before? is it advisable? is there anything I should know before I do this? it would have a cool mist for FAE and a sonic hooked up to it... any advice on the tub??? any reason why this is smarter of more foolish?

my greenhouse is, well... it's every occupied.

so what I was thinking is that I'd get a 50-60 gallon tub, cut holes in it for a cool mist and a sonic, cut a window in the top covered in taught plastic, then spray it down with alcohol... let it dry, then put my pasteurized substraight in it once it cools, put the rye in with it, mix it up good then put the lid back on and block the window... I figure six inches in a 50 gal tub will give it plenty of air..when it's full colinized I'll case it with a 50/50 peat, verm mix. then I'll uncover the window and get the cool mist running 24/7 and the sonic once every hour for a minute. they'll be a light above the window (which will be the size of the lid)

sound solid??

oh and what is the dif between dt and monotub?? and yeah... which am I doing haha?

this isnt anything like a mono or double tub then if you are hooking ultrasonic to it and a humidifier, i wouldnt even go to the effort just sounds like alot of work for something that is really so simple if i had to i would just get a 100 gallon tub and make it into a monotub that you dont have to fan/watch really at all they are made for set it and forget it attitudes

I was thinking about doing it like this guy,

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6967150/an/0/page/0

I have a green thumb and even though I'm new to mushrooms I don't think I could be a really "stick it and leave it kind of guy"

I figure this saves space, is cheaper than building a second greenhouse and overcomes tubs problems with FAE.

what do you think?

ultrasonic prolly wouldnt be needed is such a small enviroment just make sure you get a hygrometer to make sure you know what the humidity is like in there

I made a monotub that was WBS spawned to coir. That monster flushed for a month and a half.

what kind of finished dry weight did you get and how many jars did you put in it?

The amount of jars only make a difference to the time, not the yield. Its the total amount of substrate which affects the yield.

monotubs are very efficient methods for growing mushrooms. best to use 3 or 4 jars per tub. when you do it, you may want to put a black trash bag on the bottom, inside the tub to prevent side pinning.

I think the total dry weight was a little over 6oz. I don't recall exactly, but I probably used 3 quarts of WBS. Spawned to an entire brick, of course.

that's impressive, was it a 35,40, or 50 gallon tub?

I'm just trying to get an idea for the surface area that is.

So how many bricks of coir you planning on using? and youll def want to ditch the ultrasonic with a tub. The tub retains all the moisture it needs almost by itself as is, the cool mist is mainly needed for FAE.

on the subject of the sig...it was a real conversation, haha, now on the subject of the other kind of bricks...

I'll do the math when the time comes near, I'm going to knock up 10 jars of rye pretty soon so I figure I'll use 49.5 Quarts Substrate; it'll be mostly coir (40qts, whatever that comes to be, 5 bricks..ish most likely), some coffee( about five quarts) gypsum in there (about 4.5 quarts).

oh and with your blessing Akira, I'm ripping your tek off...completely...minus that fast I prefer rye. I think the Idea of forced FAE in a tub is great, it's pretty much just making the casing your green house. I love it. did you do Tyvek holes to let air out though???

but yeah, I'm ripping it off.

now get back on your tek's thread and give us those weights, and why your at it tell me how you exhausted the old air during FAE. haha.

LOL that's why I posted it so people could rip it off.

I didnt use tyvek or anything in the tubs. Once substrate is fully colonized it basically fights off most contaminations. As a matter of fact RR slices open his Green House for FAE. He seems not to worry about outside air particles in his fruiting chamber.

I was wondering, because I mean...you have a coolmist pushing in and nothing pushing out.

you got a ballpart on the weight from that tub yet :P
