Whats the best free Virus-Protection program?

Hey guys and gals. I need a little help from all of you. I need you guys to lend me your experience and insight as to what the best, or some of the best free downloadable Anti-Virus programs are at the moment.
Last night I downloaded something that I thought to believe was an ActiveX update, but really it was a bunch of spyware pop-up crap and a virus, maybe more than one. My Norton anti-virus program was a free trial period type deal and expired a long time ago, so I'm unprotected from new virus's as of about 2 years ago.
Please help me out, this crap is annoying me and its not even fun to be on the computer anymore.
Thanks in advance guys.

Well if you're only concerned about being able to download it: you can buy the downloads to the pay ones.

Yeah I know, I just don't want to have to spend any money at the moment.

F-prot Antivirus, I used it (the dos version) when I ran a bbs 20 years ago, that same version that was never updated lasted me until about 6 years ago and I never had an issue with a virus I didnt want, I'm currently using version 3.16f and it works as well as the original
F-prot is a heuristic scanner, it will find viruses that were just released and that the others havent had updates for. hands down it's the best virus scanner on the market

I use bit defender with each system I sell. It seems to be a great all around defender so far.

Avast! anti-virus is the way to go! Do not use AVG, I'm surprised so many people are still using it... The free version is crippled. It doesn't remove many viruses...just tells you about them.
Avast is great! Haven't had one problem since I started using it a few years ago.
