Fellow Shroomerites, I have decided to start a cd exchange club for us. I had had this idea a while ago, but AFOAF was...uh hem, experimenting with things and that made me too paranoid to give my address out to anyone. Now that AFOAF is not doing that anymore, i'm free to start up the Shroomery cd exchange club.
It's nothing big. Nothing fancy. What I will do to start it is, I will create some dinky free website with a list of the cd's that I want. If you have one of the cd's on my want list, and I have something you want, then i'll burn a copy of mine, and you'll burn a copy of yours.
I will not rip anyone off, I will not send you cd's that skip(unless i'm unaware of said skip) and all I ask is that you all do the same. I will probably put up links on my page for each shroomerite who wants his or her want list posted as well after I get mine started.
I guess i'll put up a link in my signature once I get the page set up, and just to warn you, I am going to post this thread in OTD, but don't take that as a spam.

i work @ a recording studio that has a media library of literally thousands of titles.

I'm pretty sure that this isn't illegal. We're just some friends who will be burning cd's for each other.
I'm very, very, very bad at creating websites, but as long as it suits it's purpose, then who cares, right? If there is anyone out there who wants to make this site look good, let me know.
Here's the site, with my very small want list so far. Pretty soon my want list will be huge.

It is SO illegal! Copying and distributing copyrighted works is VERY illegal.
That's why Napster and AudioGalaxy don't exist anymore!

I think if you trade burned cd's on a mass scale it's illegal, but I doubt TOO many people will participate in this club. Therefore it's just a few friends trading cd's with one another. Nothing illegal about that.
Anyway, make up your want list now! Let's get this going!

Should we make a list of wants or just give a list of all music owned so we can pick and choose?
Not sure of the legality of such a club but I'm gonna see if I can find out.

I got Roxio and its awesome. I gotz me a CD burner to if anyone is interested in B+P for Phish shows and Strangefolk...stuff like that

This sounds great. I have some Phish shows, Terence Mckenna with Alien Dream Time, Korn, White Zombie, Coal Chamber, Prince, Monster Magnet, and Tool--
I am looking for more Terence Mckenna CD's and other types of spoke word albums.

That can't be true. Blank cd's would be illegal. When they sell blank cd's they're aware that someone is going to burn a cd and give it to someone. The way you've got it sounds a lot like San Pedro cacti. It's legal to own, but if you take the mescaline out, it's illegal. I doubt that blank cd's are legal as long as they don't change hands. I also doubt the music buiness is after flea markets and yard sales either(they sell the real thing!)
I'm going to keep this site going until I get a C&D letter.

It is completely legal under copyright law to make "backup" copies of CDs and DVDs.
Giving or selling said copy to another person is Illegal.
This was decided in the "Betamax" court cases that opened the door for vcrs and such.
Hollywood and the rest of the industry are currently trying to change the rights of consumers by limiting the new technologies. For more info on this ongoing and behind closed doors "meetings" of industry leaders, you can visit the Electronic Frontier Foundation
