Rye substrate
    #6961930 - 05/24/07 02:46 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

quick question, I'm looking into producing mass quantities of Rye substrate, so I can inoculate many jars, and keep them inoculating other jars. I looked up a recipe for Rye Substrate which included gypsum. Is that an imperative ingredient? If so where can I get it?

thanks

The main function of gypsum is to make nutrients more available to the mycelium, and to help in aeration.

I'm doing RGS bags without it, but I'm also putting it in both my casing layers and sometimes I put it in my substrate. You should probably include it... Shouldn't cost much at all.

incorrect in wbs/rye jars there main function is to make it less sludge like since this can be a problem in rye jars.in a casing layer or bulk substrate then yes that would be correct.

how much per jar should be used, because I've been having "clumping" problems myself.

When I make up ten quart jars of grains, I soak the ten cups of grain in 3 1/2 gallons of water with a tablespoon of gypsum mixed in well. Since I personally always presoak the grains in weak coffee, I add 1/4 teaspoon of hydrated lime as well. If you soak in plain water, skip the lime.
