Adventure Bhutan
    #6963796 - 05/25/07 01:16 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I'm watching a documentary of a group of white water rafters who are mapping an unknown river in the Himalayas. It's so intense and they keep bitching about how they need to move fast and such, but they have all kinds of shots from a standing location and what not. Some of the shots are from high in the mountain too!

What is going on here? Is anyone else watching the same thing?

I would think that taking the time to set up camera gear on vertical cliffs would be mighty dangerous, especially whenever there is NO short-term medical care.

I think these people might be crazy.

UPDATE: one dude just slipped on a rock and rammed his shin into a sharp rock. The bone is perforated and they are literally in the middle of nowhere. This guy is experiencing the worst pain of his life.

I've seen the previews for that on Discovery for the past 2 weeks. They promote it during every commercial break. If they're promoting it that much, I know it has to be good. They promoted the hell out of Planet Earth and it was totally warranted.

Planet Earth rocks hard! I want the DVD box set right now. That would be totally amazing for tripping and what not.

That said, I can't believe the situations these people put themselves into. The team leader cracked the shit out of his leg, and is operating on the edge of his pain threshold. Now they're stuck at the beginning of a canyon river with vertical walls. They can't navigate the river because the rapids are too intense even for the pros.

I am literally appalled. Words can't describe what I feel when I watch this.

Ack. That makes me not want to watch it now. I'm sure it's amazing but I just hate thinking about being stuck in that situation and seeing other people in ungodly amounts of pain.

As far as Planet Earth is concerned... I don't get the Discovery Channel at school (fucking retarded, it's an academic institution). Over spring break I set up the Tivo to record all of Planet Earth while I was home, but didn't set it to "do not delete." The entire series was erased because my mom records every fucking episode of Oprah, Dr. Phil, Montel, American Idol, etc. Needless to say, I was pissed as fuck that my educational show was erased for some mindless, mind rotting bullshit. I told my family how stupid it was that the only show I wanted recorded was erased. I tried searching to see if they were showing repeats and they weren't, so my dad offered to buy me the DVD set. I'm definitely taking him up on that offer.

On a separate note, FireFox's spell check feature doesn't recognize DVD as a word. Who the fuck programmed that feature?

My fiance went to Bhutan for a month and had an amazing time.  I want to go someday.

I could handle going too. But I don't think I'd be able to handle the rafting and kayaking these people are doing. They are the best, but I have to believe that they're slightly stupid just because of some of the rapids they go over, but hey...different strokes for different folks right?

Right.

He did a pretty long trek through the mountains while there, and that looks like it was fun, some awesome pictures.  I'm all set with raging rapids though

when I searched for the show on youtube, I came up with a trailer for a downhill mountain unicycling movie instead ... it's pretty hardcore.
