Quote:
The CIA has received secret presidential approval to mount a covert "black" operation to destabilize the Iranian government, current and former officials in the intelligence community tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com.
The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject, say President Bush has signed a "nonlethal presidential finding" that puts into motion a CIA plan that reportedly includes a coordinated campaign of propaganda, disinformation and manipulation of Iran's currency and international financial transactions.

So then, you mean Iran, and not Iraq. Perhaps you should edit the thread title.

Perhaps he should. And perhaps he should consider the treason of ABC and these anonymous cowards for revealing for all to see our clandestine operations. Because whether or not he wants there to be none, he has not been granted the authority to decide such matters. And neither have the aforementioned criminals.

Yes, and lets wipe clean that abomination of our constitution, the first amendment.
All things that OUR government does should be available to all to do what we please. Freedom of information is a badly needed amendment to the constitution. The idea of a clandestine operation is an affront to the people's right to know what our government is doing. Especially when it involves the destruction of institutions of sovereign nations.

What objects are you proposing to yourself? Are they the objects you really value? If they are not, you are cheating yourself. I don't meant that if you chose to pursue the objects you most value, you will attain them; of course not. Your experience will tell you that. But success in getting after much labor what you really don't care for is the bitterest and most ridiculous failure." -George Santayana

So the CIA is gonna counterfeit a shit load of IRAN's currency to drop it like a rock eh? So then they can't pay its debt off and then the country goes into a tailspin economically and no one will lend to them. Craziness...
CIA at its best.

That's just beautiful there. Fortunately this idea is held by an incredibly tiny yet fabulously marginal segment of our society that there is no possibility anything remotely resembling this will become policy. The Constitution is not, in some estimable judge's words, a suicide pact and though I defend your right to commit suicide I have no intention of hugging your ass as you take that leap off the precipice. The Constitution quite clearly permits the prosecution of those who reveal state secrets, contrary to what you may have erroneously garnered from your eighth grade social(ist) studies class.
Scooter Libby has not yet had a trial there lonestar (nor, for that matter, has Tom Delay) but it certainly brings up an interesting point. If the special prosecutor can demand testimony for a non-leak leak and jail reporters who refuse disclosure of their sources, what can the actual justice department due to compel reporters to disclose their sources when there is a real bona fide damaging leak? Or did the administration want this leaked? To, you know, sow a little paranoia in an already unstable regime. Because things aren't so great in Iran these days anyway.

SCOOTER LIBBEY was Convicted for forgetting something about the CIA Valerie Wilson leak/non-leak, and faces a likely sentencing range of one to three years in prison when he is sentenced June 5.

oops! fixed. thanks, ha. would have been a bit outdated, no?

of course not, and I'd bet we've already been doing covert ops in Iran since before 9/11, up to now anyways. But it is new, in that it was broken by the news (ABC) so fast, and it's extremely relevant to the current situation. As opposed to breaking the news a decade after it happened.
