Colorado River Toad

Can one legally buy one of these as a pet, and keep it relatively low-maintenance in an aquarium?

Wouldn't that be something? Better than a horse, this pet can REALLY take you a ride.

I still have it on my list: To wander into the Sonoran desert, find one in the wild - harrass it and make it piss some happy sauce onto a light bulb and go to town.

Col river toads are easy to take care of. Just have to change their water daily to every other day and feed them when they're hungry. Their hunger varies, sometimes they eat like 60-100 crickets a week sometimes they eat 1-2 crickets a week sometimes they eat nothing.

Col river toads aern't frogs their toads.

I have two col river toads and african bullfrog. I never harvested the toads drugs it is not right to do it in my opinion but you can do whatever you want.

the closest thing to affection my frog gave me was once it didn't like the way i was holding it and it bit me in the finger and made me bleed. they do not care about you but you have to care about them. They're selfish little animals but kinda cool in my oppinion.

I chose my words above to try and make you smile.  I'm sorry it did not work and I felt it was rather obvious that I was trying to have fun.

Truly, to revise and correct the word above "HARRASS":  Please replace it with the following -> "I would gently and lovingly stroke the little guy, and hope that he would squirt for me."

Think of frogs as rectangles and toads as squares. Just like all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares, all toads are frogs, but not all frogs are toads.

think of it like this : toads usually have large parotoid glands behind their eyes where frogs do not. Toads also have significantly shorter legs and usually spend their life on the ground. Lots of frogs are tree top dwellers where as toads rarely are. clearly different in my oppinion.

Pikashroom didnt you get a pet buffu toad hoping to harvest its droogz? and eventually the crickets you were feeding it nawed off your toads legs?

anyway I think it would be a kick ass Idea theres lots of web sites you could find showing you how to manage your toad, proper extraction and drying techniques so you dont hurt the little guy.

You are entitled to your opinion, but I think that the vast majority of biologists would disagree with you. A frog is an amphibian in the order Anura. All toads are members of the order Anura. Some, which are members of the family Bufonidae, are classified as "true Toads", and some other frogs are called toads, such as the European spadefoot toad, which is called a toad despite not blonging to the family Bufonidae. Regardless of what they are called all of these toads are members of the order Anura, and are thus frogs.

I have 2 bufo alvarius, colorado river toads. The first one I got's legs seemed to have dissapeared like a ghost. He's still living and doing great though. I doubt it was the crickets. When I bought them thinking to get some 5-MEO-DMT out of them I tried to gently squeeze the glands cept nothin came out and I figure if I would have squeezed harder it would have hurt them. Being my pet I didn't want to have a bad relationship with it so I didn't squeeze hard enough. I haven't tried since that one time. Oh well they're cool pets anyway.

no they're silent. just look at it this way if you want one then plan on changing their water daily and constantly buying crickets for many years. you can't just put them in a cage and not feed them or change their water. also you must give them distilled water as tap water is harmful to them. make sure you have 5 inches of peat moss (like the stuff you use for 50/50 casing mix) for their bedding. For their water dish I use clay type dog dish. I would avoid using plastic for their water dish because plastic can release chems in their water and possibly be bad for the toads. feed them as much as they will eat. oh yea don't bother buying one unless you have a 30 gallon sized aquarium. I would imagaine a large clear plastic storage bin would work just as well though.

By changing their water, what do you mean? Drinking water, or a pond type setup? because they sound like decent pets, with drug possibilities (if i  can get the stuff out without hurting them). could possibly trip with them while tripping on their stuff  :drumming: !

Good luck getting the poison out of them. Haven't seen a way to do it without hurting them. if you can than power to you. By changing their water all I mean is dumping out old water from their dish (I just use a dog dish no filtration/pond type set up) rinsing it out and then putting DISTILLED bottled water in their dish. They often time take big shits in their water which would clog up a filtered setup.

Ok, thanks. i didn't know if by water you meant a layer of water (an inch or 2) at the bottom of the tank for them to chill in. some pet i used to have had that, and i could imagine cleaning that out daily in a 30gallon tank would be quite annoying.
