somewhere in the grow section, theres a file called "uncle lazlos tek", where a small chunk of mycelium is broken up and used as an inoculant. Another benefit is the substrate you inoculate colonizes very quickly. I haven't done it, but I've heard some good things about it, so it might work for you if you can keep it sterile. Good luck.

save your clean jar...sterilize as many jars as possible (with substrate). Perpare a sterile enviroment, sterilze a spoon, transfer myceliim to as many new jars as possible, buy some redy-made-sterile agar plates and innoculate with some mycelium, if you have pressure cooker read ole Lazlo`s tek
(just using rye grain as substrate and use it make mycelium water)
you can store the jar in the fridge for a while,
prepare a sterile enviroment!!!!

good luck

Solitaire, I think your first plan will only get contaminated. If your cakes (properly prepared) have had a high tendency to contam, why would you think you can pack the good cake in a nutritious home without that nutrition getting contam'd?

I wouldn't mess with Uncle Lazlo's since its just another contam problem. Grow the cake you got, to practice growing cakes for when your next set of cakes comes out. (you won't get much, but should practice). Make another set of cakes, keep it simple until you get a good set of cakes.

I wanted to expand this one cake just a bit at a time so that the fresh substrate would colonize quickly. By slowly adding more and more substrate for it to colonize I hoped to increase the amount of mycelium but decrease the chance of contamination due to slow colonization I'm pretty sure that I'm having contamination problems because the jars took too long too colonize. On my first attempt at growing 2 years ago I had a 100% success rate. My last two attempts recently have ended in almost complete failure.
