RR's holes in 6 sides pf tek 'shotgun' terrarium

I watched your PF Tek video on yahoo yesterday. http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?ei=UTF-8&b=1&vid=549451&gid=705116
Then took it upon myself to put together one of your buck shot style terrariums! Hundreds of holes and many colanders of perlite later I had it set up with a hygrometer in it. It is now sitting at 95% humidity and I am not going to have to fan it. Damn I can go away for the weekend and not have to worry (too much).
What can I say. I've been through loads of terrarium ideas, trying to get to an automated setup for my cakes, and I think you have found it.
It's like taking a big old equation and simplifying it down to x=2y. A beautifully simple idea. Genius
Well done man and thanks for sharing. Much appreciated here.

The man is definitly on his game along with a few others 'round here.. I've already watch the PF Tek videos on youtube about three times.. I've made numerous batches of PF tek cakes and NEVER mixed up more than one cake at a time (yes its ridiculous) For the first time the other day I made the batch Roadkill led me through for 5 cakes at a time, the water content looked a little excessive, but that could have just been the grade of verm I was using.. But they are knocked up so only time will tell how well this PF tek works for ME. Man I just have to stress how nice it was to make more than a single cake at one time. I was almost shaking with excitment.. LOL

Fine vermiculite holds more moisture per volume of measurement than course verm, due to there being more of it. The basic formula of 2-1-1 works great with fine or medium verm, but if you're using course verm, you might want to cut down a bit on the water. I've found that cakes as well as grains, and even bulk substrates colonize a bit better and faster if made up on the dry side. With cakes, it's easy to adjust the water down, and then simply do a dunk and roll at birthing to put the moisture in for the flush at that time.
If the first batch comes out a bit too wet, simply reduce moisture by 10% to 20% on the next batch until you find the sweet spot.
I'd still recommend the occasional fanning. You simply can't have too much air exchange, and the turbulence from fannings helps prevent trich from getting a foothold on your projects. Good luck! RR

I still have my 1954 panhead with tank shift that I bought back in '72 for $500. At that time, you could get panheads super cheap because everybody though shovels were the shit. I put it in a '58 swingarm frame in the early 80's when my back/ass tired of the rigid. It's got over a quarter of a million miles on it since '72, and god only knows how many it had then. RR

Sorry to reopen this but just saying that the perlite mentioned above would not be suitable, if anything your just giving contams a fighting chance with the so called "miracle gro food." just thought id give my 2 cents if you happened to be glancing through...

I had a question about the RR terrarium method. First, it is genious and because of his youtube videos I have purchased his dvd set because of the wealth of information he provides. In the video, it looked like there was a small fan installed on the terrarium, do you recommend doing this?

not really unless you cant tend to your grow very often to fan. If you were to do something like this it would be smart to get a filter (preferably hepa) to keep contams out.

I only fan 2 times daily with this terrarium and works out fine.no need for any filtration system.best way to keep contams out is fae.

im currently using rr's pf tek for my first grow. hopefully all goes well. so far my jars are colonizing pretty fast. some are at 30-40% and its been 5 days. the only thing i see thats strange is my mycelium is not rhizomorphic at all. its very cottony for the most part.
most people on here say psilocybe cubensis has a rhizomorphic type...

You really dont have to worry about contamination. Your fruiting chamber is not clean even if you fill your FAE holes with cotton or whatever you use. As soon as you open that jar after colonization it will be exposed to a wide array of bacteria and fungi spores. Unless you have a clean room, you are not avoiding contams. I have used this terrrium on all of my grows. Only one contam. I am talking a lot of casings too. So really I promise, if you have a healthy cake of fully colonized whatever, the mycelium will do its job and protect itself. And if your cakes do get contams it is because they are not healthy. Just as xaxphaanes says. Fresh air exchange is the best way to avoid contams.

I must keep reminding myself of this. I must keep reminding myself of this. I must keep reminding myself of this. I must keep reminding myself of this.

What size drill bit do you use for making all those holes? Probably not that big of a deal, but I'm just curious. I just bought a new 50 gallon clear FC to use with this tek. I built a setup with a coolmist and a fogger inside of it on a timer, but I quickly learned how unnecessary the whole thing really was. Maybe if I had a Martha setup, but I just had the thing hosed to a big rubbermaid. I already stopped using the previous setup and put perlite in the rubbermaid instead, opened up the 1" holes where I had poly fill before, and just use the coolmist for FAE once in awhile. Simple is definitely better, and perlite works so well.
Also, do you drill the same amount of holes on all six sides?

I use a 1/4" drill bit and roughly the same amount of holes on all six sides. It still helps to fan a time or two per day, even with all the holes. RR

this has really convinced me to use this method, i had watched the video on youtube an its a good simple method.
I find though that when mixing werm with water i only add half of what is in he recipie to start with, then add some more till i get wot i think should be the right content. My verm that i get doesnt say what grade it is, looks to be medium - but using the recipe it seemed to wet.
But i still got good myc growth, even with it a little wet and even in a jar with brf made from brown rice ground in a pepper grinde (well it wasnt quite flour, stil some smale chunks in there)
Im thinking of buying the dvd too. i have most of the vid on me copmuter but vista sucks nd freezes after 2 minutes ofplaying it.

i built a shotgun fruiting chamber and added 6 inches of well rinsed and drained perlite to it. the holes are the quarter inch as required spaced 2 inches apart then elevated on a closet rack for air exchange on the bottom. I misted it and after 2 hours it is reading 92%!! thats awesome i was concerned cause i drilled approx 400 holes . just checked again 95% shit works i followed the specs and its working nuff said thanks RR.
