I buy the light tan malt (powder not liquid)... never have seen a bran name...at the store I go to it is sold in bulk. While your there get a pack of brewer's yeast...this is different than baking yeast. The agar is just "agar agar". Email me if you have problems or questions.

All kinds of malt are good. Rice malt, rye malt, wheat malt, and anything else. Having multile kinds of malt would be good because after a few generation on agar, the strain gets old and degenerates. So, you can make new agar with some other malt kind, and thus replacing the medium.
I like the rice malt the best.
