I'm using a food dehydrator to dry out my harvest right now. It has no thermostat so im guessing its ~140F but I also have a fan pointed at it to help cool it off some. How long does it usually take for them to be dry?
And thanks monstermitch, ohmatic, agar, RR, oatman, creamcorn, blutjager and everyone else for there help I just got my first harvest ever incredible 10" texans Can't wait to see the dry weight Thanks!

Dude you're not supposed to use heat, because it can potentially destroy the psiloc(yb)in. Just use the fan.

I use a dehydrater, usually I leave it going for 10 - 15 minutes. Take the shroomies out and put them on a plate.
I then put them inside of a glass cooking tray, that I'd had in the oven for 20 minutes at 475 degrees. As a note, put the shrooms in the baking tray after you pull the tray out of the oven. Don't cook the shroomies.
Wrap tinfoil over the baking tray with one of the length wise lips up, place a small fan in front of it. And in no time flat, you'll have beautiful cubies.

You failed to fully understand my method, I don't lose potency. As in my last thread I stated: "As a note, put the shrooms in the baking tray after you pull the tray out of the oven. Don't cook the shroomies." Read more thouroughly please.

I say no heat at all, there are plenty of ways to dry them without using any heat at all. Fan dry them then put then in desiccant for a few days. You can get them bone dry that way with NO heat. No point in ruining something you have worked so hard on for so long because you can't be patient for a few extra days.

ummm... all this no dehydrator crap needs to be thrown out....
a proper dehydrator will work fine, plenty of peole have success drying at 105. a proper dehydrator to get would be a 'nesco american harvest dehydrator'. agar, hippiechick, myself and MANY others use them... i set mine to 95 degrees though, they normally are cracker dry withing 36-60 hrs.
agar's post on dehydrators
some people need to spend more time learning and less time thinking they know a lot, this is how misinformation gets spread and terms such as 'myc piss' and myths about dehydrators killing mushroom potency (yes, some will actually cook your mushrooms, but that doesn't mean all dehydrators are bad and can't be used).
Times have changed since Staments wrote his books and over time methods have changed as well. the shroomery has almost 10 years of info and experiements, so unless you really know what you're talking about leave it to someone who does know and spend your time reading up.....
even the old style dehydrators with a heating element and no fan can be used, just don't plug it in, work's much better for fan drying than box or table, just load up your mushrooms on the trays and set a small box fan top blowing in. A proper dehydrator will have temp control, a heat element and a built in fan such as an 'american harvest'

I always fan dry and I don't even own a dehydrator,a few days in front of the fan and they are cracker dry.I only use desiccant for long term storage when I'm not going to be able to get to them for a while and I don't want them reabsorbing moisture. If you live in a high humidity area, fan drying will not get them cracker dry and you will need a dehydrator or/and desiccant. But most dehydrators don't get any where near hot enough to ruin anything

I usually get cracker dry in under 24 hours with my Nesco set @ 95 degrees. If I'm in a hurry I might just turn up the heat a bit or use my Elite brand dehydrator that has no temp dial. This can shave off a decent amount of time.

I see no difference in potency between fan drying, dehydrating at lower temps (~95 degrees), or dehydrating at slightly higher temps (~130 degrees).

The best device I ever ever had for drying my mushies cost me 15 bucks, a desk fan (maybe 6 inch diameter) and 4 sets of "chicken wire" on a tray to make shelf's all contained wthin a simple rubbermaid with a set of intake and release vents then put it someplace room tempature and turn off the lights.
I don't know whether or not it's been proven that drying mushies in the dark and preserving them in the dark increases their longevity but what's it hurt?
Read some tek's I am sure there are a few on different drying method's on the forums and on the main site and make something that's perfect for you! But please for the love of the mushroom's lay off the heat. 9 out of 10 batches I tried when i first started growing using a heated dehydrator left me dissapointed until I built my "chamber".

A friend of mine dries his with a dehydrator at around 100 degrees for about 3 days and they are cracker dry and ridiculously potent.
As far as heat, have you guys ever had tea??? The fungus is steeped in near boiling water for a while and if done right will knock you on your ass....

When the mushies are cracker dry (the snap when you bend the stems) they are done. I usually just put mind on a screen in front of a fan. I would say it takes 2 - 3 days.

Save the planet, save the tray.
The green trays that veggies come in are handy. (I'm talking about the plastic, green, grid style veggie trays.) Fruit goes in the tray, one tray is stacked on another. Added weight makes it possible to place a column onto a fan that's moving more air.
For extra credit, place an empty tray on top and thread string down two sides and tie off. Now you can flip to a different side, hang them from your ceiling fan, drag them behind your car, or hang them on your front porch and use as a windsock! (Ok. I might be overselling, now...)

For what's its worth we now know mushrooms are best drying in a dehydrator at around 160°F. They dry quickly this way with minimal loss in potency. There's a ton more info but I'm keeping it short.
Have a nice night!

Leave them in until you can take the fattest stem and try to bend it and it breaks. Cracker dry. Any spongy fruits you store with other fruits will cause them to become spongy as well unless you use desiccant, I put a 5 gram dry and dry in every bag up to a qp, for every so I add a 5g dry and dry.

You cut your drying time down considerably by splitting the stems apart.. I usually break the caps in half too.. if ppl that you share them with bitch about them not being whole, tell them they’re gonna chew the damn things up anyway; you just gave them a headstart and “you’re welcome”.. goddamn ingrates
