My friends shrooms have gradually turned darker and darker as they dried so that now they are almost black. Is this normal?

That is definetly not normal. Sounds a like contam problem. Dig into the cakes or substrate they came from, if you still have them, and check for mold. I wouldn't eat them till you get an opinion from an oldtimer.

Why aborts? Waht turns them black? I always heard the blackness came from rot caused by mold. I have actually only seen blck shrooms once and it was on account of green mold. Should he eat them?

The looked normal brown until picked--4-5 inches high with good size caps--definitely not aborts. No sign of mold on the casing. Everything seemed normal, but as they dried they just got darker and darker. It's possible it's just a real dark blue. It that still bad?

How are you drying them? If you are not using a fan this may happen. Dry them as fast as possible.

I put them in a food dehydrator with the heat turned all the way down for a couple of hours then put them in a container with dessicant. They started turning dark almost as soon as they started drying.

Sounds like the heat made them start to bruise and lose potency to me. Try not to use any heat while drying next time. I bet this solves your problem.

I leave mine in the dehydrator for at least a day or two with the heat set at 95F. They dry cracker dry and then I put them into the dessicant chamber. The urban legend about heat ruining your lil guys is only true for high heat.

I wouldn't worry if they weren't black when you picked them. The first time I grew them, I didn't dry them properly and they all started to turn dark blue, then practically black. I ate them all and still had a great trip!
