Should I beat the puppies?
    #6942688 -

I've got 2, 7 week old Lab/Pointer puppies that won't shut the fuck up, they are fed and healthy - should I beat them or let them whine till they get worn out?

squirt them with water each time they whine? eventually they'll learn to stop.

i'm never really one to condone beating puppies though.

Club them like they are baby seals. Then sell them for their fur.

I don't have a water bottle, maybe I should get a remote shock collar.

Maybe a formal puppy beating poll? just kidding. Sometimes putting a cheap radio in their pen set at a low volume can sooth them.

eh don't beat them. When they whine, just pop them in the face, they will eventually learn. But don't beat them to nothing.

How do I stop my puppy from crying in the crate at night?
A: The ONLY way to stop the barking in the crate is to ignore it! It can be very difficult to do, but it is necessary. Anything you say to the puppy; good or bad, the pup is getting the attention he/she is craving, in turn, making the behavior worse. Once you have complete quiet, let the puppy out of the crate. In time, your puppy will learn that quiet is what gets him/her out.

If you're gonna hit them then slightly slap them on the back of the head. Never touch their noses otherwise that will up their sense of smell.

Hitting does absolutely nothing for training dogs except making them fearful of you, which doesn't make them do what you want.

Think the dog's natural instinct. Does the mother dog ever hit her puppies? Dog's want a pack leader, a pack leader does not show frustration or anger. Use the mentality that you are the dominant being and you will tolerate their whining. Like brainiac said, ignore them. But at that age, dogs are not capable of disciplinary action like you speak of. It's like spanking a baby....You just don't do it.

Should I mail deadly snakes to assholes that beat animals? Sounds like a good idea to me...

Beating your dog's will not shut them up and can easily land you in jail (especially if you go around discussing it with people), and popping their nose won't help either. They will never stop barking just because you pop their noses. When you pop their nose they do not associate that in any way with the barking.

Shock collars are more likely to work, but that is kind of cruel imo, but they're your dogs so I'm not going to try to keep you from it. (Also I'm not too sure about shock collars, this is why I say "more likely.") Try letting them out to get more exercise, that way they burn off more energy out of the pen and they'll be less likely to bark when its time for them to calm down.

But no matter what, they ARE only 7 weeks old, and they're naturally going to be very noisy, especially if they've just been separated from their mother. so you might just want to get some ear plugs and wait it out.

But yeah.... Your seriously a piece of shit if you use any hitting to discipline the puppies. It won't do a damn thing. They don't associate your hitting with what they're doing wrong. They will just wonder why is this dude hitting me.

You would accomplish the goal of making me not be nice anymore and you would likely be getting a beating yourself.

This thread makes me kind of sad.

You have two puppies.  Babies.  They're probably going to be spending the next 12 months, being rowdy, noisy, peeing on your floor from time to time and getting into your garbage.

They're PUPPIES.  You don't want to take care of them maybe you should give them to someone that does.   Apparently you've never had a puppy before.  It's not for everyone.

Fuck that shit, my friends mom babied her two puppies and they're rotten little shits. They ate my friends Xbox, all his games, books, socks, couch. There's nothing in the house not full of teethmarks and scratches and shit. They jump up on people all the time. If you don't train your puppies right you shouldn't have puppies in the first place.

EDIT: They still don't shut the fuck up.

Hitting them is not going to make them stop whining.

It will, however, succeed in making them fearful of people's hands. Ever see a dog that cowers when someone moves their hand for any reason? It's a pitiful site.

Are not paying attention?

IGNORE them until they stop. There is a very real possibility that you might not sleep for a week...but that's part of raising a puppy.

Do you ever actually spend positive time with your puppies? Aside from threatening them? Pets are not trophies. They need to be walked, played with, talked to, groomed. Maybe you should try and figure out why they are whining so much. Maybe something is wrong? Maybe they're bored, or lonely?

7 weeks old is a bit early for 2 puppies to be away from their mother. They're probably a bit confused as to where they are, and miss their mom and littermates. Ignoring them is definitely the best option. Make them comfortable in their crate with a bed, toys, access to water, and feed them in there so that they like it in there, and feel like it's their den.

You know I gotta be honest, I'd sit there and spark a jay and watch him beat his dogs, then I'd just leave and never come back. I tend to avoid drama situations, and I wouldn't get involved if it didn't have to do with me or my family, or any of our dogs. I would however consider him an asshole, and a risky associate, and would simply not ever return there anymore.

Bad news for those dogs I'll admit, but good news for me and my family.

I've disciplined every dog I've ever owned this way, this is just the youngest I have ever had one at. None of my dogs have ever cowered whatsoever, infact they would nudge their heads under your hands to pet them. I've usually been able to housebreak fairly quickly so I have never had to exert much force on them.

Edit: and I've had them for about a week and spend an average of 4-5 hours being active with them a day. So I think they just want to come out and play.

 This doesn't mean you should continue or make a good method of dog training.

You asked for advice and you choose to ignore it and not the dog. Hopefully someday you won't be so ignorant. A stern no is appropriate but the hitting does absolutely nothing.

I was thinking more along the lines of them opening the box, only to find a snake piercing its fangs into their wrist...

Quote:

Like many others have said, you need to just ignore them when they do that so they will learn that is the time to be quiet and calm and no matter how much they whine, that fact will not change.

If you acknowledge that they are whining, they will know that it is an effective way to get what they want. If you ignore them on the other hand, they will eventually figure out that its not working, that it is a wasted effort, and they will stop.

I understand that you probably aren't truly beating your dogs and that many people (including myself) have over-reacted. But to those who DO beat dogs (as I'm sure there are a few of you here), keep in mind that while it may make them seem "obedient" temporarily, if you make a habit of it, chances are they will eventually attack you out of fear. And when an animal attacks out of fear, they attack HARD. In their minds they are fighting for their life, meaning they will not let up until they feel safe. And when that happens, there will be a high chance of an investigation as to why the dogs attacked you and you will probably be charged with animal cruelty. Endofrant.
