Debian or Kubuntu?
    #6939362 - 05/19/07 05:03 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

I'm getting tired of Xandros not supporting the latest trends, but I'm confused, isn't kubuntu really based on debian? Are there any real differences?

The whole Ubuntu family maintains its own repositories now, which are not compatible with Debian. Kubuntu will be more user friendly and "trendy" than Debian, and it doesn't have Debian's high standards for release stability.

Ubuntu comes wrapped with the GNOME desktop
Kubuntu comes wrapped with the KDE desktop

True debian releases are always superior to debian-based releases.  None of them really work with Policy, which is what makes debian debian and all the support tools are meant to be enforcing agents of the Policy.

Debian all the way

troll.

initial poster: if you want plenty of non-free crap & new crap, (k)ubuntu. If you want a "true" free, rock solid stable GNU/Linux system, debian.

I'm glad to say I went with Kubuntu and FUCK! I was throwing away my comp's potential by using Xandros.

Kubuntu detected everything on the fly, is stable as a rock (for now) and in a few hours I have the complete system running and fitting me like a glove.

Just add some repositories to your /etc/apt/sources.list and you can apt-get yourself whatever features you may or may not miss from Xandros. You can call your end result Kubuntros. =]
