Hmm. It seems most of these boards come with 65 mm standard wheels, so I'd have to invest an extra $40 for thicker wheels. But then, I guess if I'm going to buy a board I should spend the money to get the best stuff possible.

I mean, you don't HAVE to get bigger wheels, but picture this scenario (which has happened to me many times) you're cruising down a hill, rockin' out, carving huge turns, and having the time of your fuckin' life (because you're stoned as shit if you ride like I do ), when suddenly your board hits a rock that the tiny wheels can't roll over, and your board goes from 20mph to 0 in about 3 feet.
The problem is that you can't adjust to that abrupt of a speed change in your board, and you WILL go headfirst in whatever direction you were previously, but this time with nothing under you but pavement.

Riding with bigger wheels doesn't guarentee you'll be fine, but with small wheels, it's not a question of if, it's a question of when. And the answer is probably tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice. Will 72mm's be good?

Also, I'm still confused about shoes and deck. Should I get skateboarding shoes? Are the decks of longboards always wood or is there that annoying grip-tape that normal skateboards have? I can't tell from the pics on sector9.com

shoes are one of the most important things in skateboarding--it doesn't matter what kind, as long as they have relatively little material between the board and the bottom of your feet, and the bottom of the shoe is flat.

As for grip tape, you need it. Or something rough, anyway.

skateboarding shoes are designed for skateboarding soo...
& theyre comfortable too.

you'll NEED grip tape.
if you dont want griptape to cover the design,
they DO sell transparent griptape. =)

Okay thus far I have

70mm Bamboo series wheels
Bamboo Secrets (deck only)
9" Gullwing Alpine Trucks
Greaseball Bearings: Apec 5 (Set of 8)
1.5" Bolt Packs

I'm putting it together separately (as opposed to buying the complete board) to save money on wheels

I still need clear grip tape, and the complete board says it comes w/ 'mini-risers' (no idea what they are) but I can't find either in the site's hardware section. Any suggestions?

Edit: Just found the clear grip tape, and I assume mini-risers refers to riser pads. So, should I get 5/16" or 9/16" pads, or does it matter at all?

all that just so you can get larger wheels?
why dont you just email the company & ask them to upsize the wheels for you?

anyway, i dont know anymore about which brand bearings
are good, but you definately dont want cheap bearings soo i
would do some research on that.

clear grip tape: (you might want to buy 2 sheets)
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=clear+grip+tape&category0=

& one more things about laying the grip tape &
how to remove the excess tape that hangs over the deck.
once you stick the grip tape on the deck,
you'll want one of these tools handy:

with that tool, you want to push down & scrape along the edge of the entire deck, essentially scoring the griptape.
then you take the sharp ege of that tool & cut/slide/slice away the excess tape.

seriously, tho,
you're ordering from a skate shop. email them &
tell them what you want,
& see if they can custom to your needs. it might be alot cheaper, especially if you factor in all the shipping for individual parts.

spacers/risers are (usually plastic) risers,
that rise the deck from the trucks/wheels.

oh & one more thing, the reason why i chose
that deck from the bamboo series,
is that its made out of bamboo,
& bamboo is really really light.

you dont have to order that deck,
but from what ap junky said about the flex, i would actually go for the longest one. i love the flex.

& no i dont wear a helmet, but if you care about your safety, then wear one.

the only time i wear one is snowboarding. haha

ive got a sector 9 with a pintail and i live in a place where there are a lot of hills. this ended up being a bad investment cause i would have to put my foot down to stop, and it would ruin my shoes, and now i have an inflamed tendon in my knee. it blows.

There are a lot of hills here too bro.  I think it'll be fun though.  My knees are already perma-fucked from playing basketball so it's all good; and it's entertaining to just skate around at the park or whatever anyway.  It's not surfing though. :cryariver:

A longer one would be better as far as flex goes, but you lose turn radius as well. I guess you have to choose which is better, or go with a Loaded brand board; they have some that flex so soft you can bounce the middle of the board off the pavement.

Another thing to consider (not to overwhelm you) is durometer, or hardness, of the wheels. Softer wheels (74a) will have more of a "cushy" feel to them, while harder durometer (like 80a) will be very fast, and may slide on corners.
