aborts...
whats the reason for ahborts!! The strain is EQ and PF growing technique. rH is at 95%+ and fanning 1-2 times a day.
What is causing the ahborts? Cakes pin and then only one will fully mature and the rest abhort!!!

The reason is because shit happens...
Just pick the aborts, discard the cap, keep the little stem (it's good).
Very often a large shroom will grow in it's place.

Aborts happen...It's a fact of (shroom) life. If you're getting all aborts, somethings wrong.Just for the record: The word abort does not have an `h`. (abhor? who could hate an abort?)There seems to be much confusion about the word, because the word abort is a verb. Technically, those little babies are abortions. But who wants to eat an abortion? So, the shroom community has changed the verb `abort` to a noun.Ahhh! The beauty of the Englsh language...it changes and evolves.

if I am doing everything right... why is it that other people's cakes, don't have as many aborts as mine?
I see cakes in which almost all pins go to full maturity... But for my cakes, I will only get 1-3 that go to full maturity and like 10-20 ahborts?

I am also growing EQs with BRF cakes, and I get these huge pinsets....one or two shrooms will make it to maturity and the rest will abhort. Like you, I have near perfect conditions...it may just be the way this strain behaves with this style substrate. Ive had better results when casing, usually getting 4 or 5 fruits, but still, from a large pinset I will get mostly abhorts. The trip from the EQs is definately worth it, they are very potent.

You are getting aborts because you're doing something wrong. Aborts do happen, but most growers are not happy to get them. I try not to have any aborts. I feel its a waste of time for me to just "let them happen. Especially in large numbers.
Ways to reduce the numbers of aborts:
1) Make sure you are fanning enough. Excessive C02 levels greatly effect the way the mushroom forms into an adult.
2)Your humidity is too high.
3) There is not enough fresh air, once again more fanning...(BUT NOT TOO MUCH!! 
4) The strain could be faulty, but probably not the problem.
5) The substrate/casing is too dry.
Review your methods. Make sure your fresh air and moisture content is more frequently checked. Dont just let your aborts happen, do something about it. Its not a good way to think, that they just happen on their own..

the water content is pretty good I think. cakes are dunked after each flush for 8-16 hours.
I don't think my strain is faulty, i got a print from a very big shroom from a set of cakes before
if the terrium smells a little, not a bad odor, could that cause problems?

oh yeah, rH is atleast 95% + (from my hygrometer)
fanning is about 1-3 times a day (usually, twice a day)

hmmm.. weird.
Sounds like things would be OK. Only thing I would think of is lack of air exchange. Maybe cut some 1inch holes and fill with polyfill if ya want mroe gas exchange while your gone at work.

The PF Tek says that the abhorts are more powerful than the normal mushrooms. So, if abhorts let you trip harder, what's the problem with them?

What is a good way to tell if your cake is to dry ... lot's of aborts?? can i mist it?? my cakes have lot's aborts and little mushies trying to grow but not to good ... could it because of lack of water and how a good way to give them water while try are still in their first flush

i had a cake that only grew aborts.
i dunked it and everything but it wont budge.
i started injecting water to my cakes - and walla - some big fat shrooms.
injecting water realy gives great results.
in between flushes and to give i t a boost when the shrooms are small.

anyways, I'll try increasing my air exchange... I really think that's what it might be...
Are there ways to increase air exchange in a perlite terrium without increasing the fanning or cutting holes into the terrium???

(LOL) I see... question number two,
Why do you asume all aborts have rotten caps ?
They do if you don't pick them on time you know, well i guess it has to do with how experienced you are distinguishing an abort or a growing pin, i always eat aborts with caps because the caps are not rotten, get it ?

I too would like to know if anybody has an answer to BoB's question, as nearly cycle I have done so far I've had at least 70% of my cakes produce a LOT of aborts....

Well, naturally! If the abort's cap hasn't blackened, it's NOT rotten yet.
That's obvious, but beginners wait 'til they're black to be sure they're aborts.
In that case you must not eat the black caps. I know from my short experience that if you pick them when they've still got some brown left, just a gray ring or gray top with a brown ring, then you CAN eat the cap.
What I meant was, IF THE CAP'S BLACK DON'T EAT IT!

hey CD your problem may be that you play w/ the cakes too often. If you find yourself checking them several times a day this could cause them to abort, plus and this is just a suggestion fo real proof behind it, when you are fanning don't fan like you're trying to achieve flight. This removes humidity and the terrarium has to start building up again. just remove the top and lightly fan once and that's it. You probably don't even have to fan, lifting the lid of your terrarium may be enough. just some suggestions.

I do fan pretty hard when I fan out my terrium... I don't touch my cakes except when i birth, harvest and dunk...

I think most will agree with me when I say that aborts are mostly caused by changes in optimum environmental conditions. If you have perfect humidity and temp and then all of the sudden something goes out of wack (like fanning to the point of 30% reduction in humidity) pins may abort. Something to think about
