First of all, these pics look better than the cake does in person (Go Olympus!  )
This is uncased compost started with rye grain spawn, the temp is now 70 and RH is 99%. It's been 14 days since spawning the compost. The strain is either Thai or Cambodian (not sure which)
Q's -
(1) Does it look healthy?
(2) I can see what look like hyphal knots (1mm round white spots) all over the place - Are they? (They don't show in the pics, they're too small.)
(3) When do you think I can expect to see pins?
The very dark spots are compost not fully colonized yet.
The VERY bright white spots are water droplets reflecting the flash.
I would appreciate experienced input please, and thank you!

I was thinking the same thing... I have some peat/lime, but I'm nervous about doing it. Do I need to pasturize the casing? If I case just a small corner as a test would that be bad?

It's not cased, you're looking at the compost, and as I said the pic's really make it look better than it looks to the naked eye. It smells musty/shroomy, not at all sour. It is a translucent rubbermaid tub, but I've covered the sides w/cardboard.
The depth/shape of the cake is deceiving. It's actually only a mound in the bottom of the tub ranging from 0" at the edges to 2" high in the middle.
I have back-up dried for the 4th, but I wan't fresh! Never done fresh!
Do you really think I mighht make it? Any suggestions to get it to pin?

Well, I sure am hoping beatle! No real biggie if it doesn't happen, I've got some 5 year old dired ones that still work awesome (at least they did back in December) and when your talking 5 years old, what's another 7 months? 5 grams should put me up on the moon!

Yes. I've been considering doing that in the next few days if there's still no change. I just want the mycelium growth to peak out on the compost first. There are still a few small clumps that aren't fully colonized. Once they are it'll be time for the fridge.
