ID Request...bluing?
    #6927720 - 05/17/07 01:42 AM (14 years, 19 hours ago)

Two mushrooms found earlier in a cow pasture in Middle TN. Would you call this bluing? (see stems). Thank you for your help, I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Habitat: Found in a small island of woods in the middle of a large cow pasture, growing from or at least appeared to be growing from cow dung.

Gills: Dark purple maybe? See photos.

Stem: Seemed grayish....but after squeezing it to test for bluing, it has turned a dark color...I can't quite tell if it's blue or not since I really have never seen it.

Cap: Golden brown at the tip, fading to a gray-brown near the edges. Smooth at the tip and seems cracked looking near the edges, reminds me of a thatch roof.

Spore print: Dark Purple? See picture.

Bruising: Stem seemed to bruise a darker color heavily (bluing?) The cap seemed to darken some when squeezed, but nowhere near how much the stem did.

Location: Picked in Middle, TN.

Habitat: Found in a cow pasture, growing from or at least appeared to be growing from cow dung.

Gills: Dark purple maybe? See photos.

Stem: Slightly lighter golden color than the stem...cream maybe?

Cap: A golden color. Smooth with the exception of some faint wrinkles.

Spore print: Dark Purple? See picture.

Bruising: Stem bruises a darker color, but not nearly as fast as the first specimen. Probably took 10-20 minutes to fully bruise after squeezing it.

Location: Middle, TN.

Those are inactive members of the Genus Panaeolus.

Bummer, I guess you can't win them all. Would you say that what I see happening to the stems is "bluing" ....for future reference?

I exhausted several pictures of different Panaeolus members....but I was unable to find anything that looked quite like those. I will look harder I suppose. =]

slot you're about 2 hours from gatlinburg, go to the smokies, you'll find actives, tons of laughing gyms. Some active wood lovers, and this is the time of year to find some pans up there, so go!

and so you knows there are actually cubes in tennessee
