Well the only way to answer that is to know if they have ten toes.

They are called blue foot but while blue foot is used, it actually ws a name applied only to Psilocybe caerulipes and these mushrooms from Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virgina are all Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata, An entirely different species.

The real blue foot mushrooms take up to two hours or so to turn blue while the P. ovoideocystidiata turn blue pretty fast.

And then there are the microscoppic features which diiferentiate the two species form one another.

I am working on a paper on the DNA of both species in Thailand with SEM, some cultivation and chemical analysis and have just been able to have my colleague in Thailand to obtain specimens I requested for comparative analysis and so on and so forth.

A good piece of real research.

mj

so since they are different species, Why do we call them blue foots? Do they have the same hallucinogenic effects? Is one more potent than the other? I live in WV, FYI

It's just a common name. Its attributed by the layman to similar species based on macroscopic observations and absent of a rigorous taxonomic method.
From what I read, Ps. ovoid~ blues nearly immediately and Ps caerulipes blues over several minutes.

What inquiring minds want to know is how far north has the season travelled? Too bad the Wabash doesn't grow these 'shrooms.

my area in southeast michigan was nailed by a ton of rain and hail yesterday and it was hot and humid around 81 degrees. But I got rapidly cooler over night. i went out along my river looking for them but all I found was some small galerinas.

p.caerulipes has already been found in michigan. P. ovoideocystidiata has not yet been reported from michigan, although their is a chance of P. ovoideocystidiata being mistakenly id'ed as caerulipes. As coon said their probably is a chance of finding both. I looked last season here in michigan with no luck.

I have been picking 2-3 times a week now with much sucess, once I get my camera pics will be up. I plan on going out to a new place I scoped out, the habitat is probably 2-3 square mils of land that P. ovoid should grow... I'll post up the finds...

I was out around Cinci and Athens this weekend, didnt find shit. Well we found 10-15 lbs of Ganoderma, but it seems ALL LBMs weren't fruiting.

The ground was moist but most of the creeks we found were dry.
