popular music trashing US president.... I'm down.
    #6923438 - 05/16/07 05:33 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

The trend seems to suggest that George W. Bush will be a name not soon forgotten, and undoubtedly, a prominent name in history- with a reputation for being one of the most stubborn, stupid, cowardly, and ruthless leaders the US has seen.

This is of course, all redundant.  But I smile, and roll my eyes, as i listen to new popular music on the radio "subtley" trashing the US president.  I would have been impressed 5 yrs ago...

The first new popular song was played on the radio as i was driving to work in San Diego a number of months ago.  It was the Muse's "Knights of Cydonia" :

Come ride with me,
Through the veins of history
I'll show you how god
Falls asleep on the job

And how can we win
When fools can be kings
Don't waste your time
Or time will waste you

No one's gonna take me alive
The time has come to make things right
You and I must fight for our rights
You and I must fight to survive

It doesn't take a genius to realize the reference...  Yet slightly more conspicuous is the new Nine Inch Nails "Capital G" :

He pushed a button and it dropped a bomb
You pushed the button and could watch it on the television
Those motherfuckers didn't last too long uh-uh!
I'm sick of hearing about the have's and the have not's
Have some personal accountability
The biggest problem with the way that we've been doing things is
The more we let you have the less that I'll be keeping for me

Well I used to stand for something
Now I'm on my hands and knees
Traded in my god for this one
And he signs his name with a capital G

Don't give a shit about the temperature in Guatemala
Don't really see what all the fuss is about

Ain't gonna worry about no future generations and uh!
I'm sure somebody gonna figure it out
Don't try to tell me how some power can corrupt a person
You haven't had enough to know what its like
You're only angry cause you wish you were in my position
Now nod your head because you know that I'm right, alright!

Well I used to stand for something
But forgot what that could be
There's a lot of me inside you
Maybe you're afraid to see

Well I used to stand for something
Now I'm on my hands and knees
Traded in my god for this one
And he signs his name with a capital G

I wonder what is next. :smile2:

Dunno who Mr. Lif is, but i was referring specifically to popular music- stuff you hear on lots of radio stations.
Surely, Muse and NIN are not the first to bash on Bush.

Dunno, but it seemed appropriate. I think of dubbya's world as one where Jesus is white, with a crew-cut, and comes from a poor sharecropper's hut somewhere in Arkansas. That being the case, the lyrics to my song might actually be meaningful to dubbya and people like him, so I thought I'd throw it out there.

Odessa Texas 1948
Destined for greatness, and he couldn't wait
As for motive, that's up for debate
Lone Star, yeah... he's packin the heat
Rubbin elbows with the social elite
Who took notice of a world at his feet
The big drill, and the CIA
Richard Nixon paved the way for this god to have his day VP under Bonzo Reagan
Then Pres, of this once great nation
91', his first invasion
Oh... the good ol' days I miss
Now get me out of this, this hierarchal abyss
Kissin' Middle Eastern ass
While pride, black gold, and gas
Just a profiteer on your foreign soil
Operation Blood for Oil
Passed the buck to his number one
Now we're fucked by the bastard son
Can't hide, so we better run
Three cheers for the underachiever
Once a drunk, and now a believer
All hail The Great Deceiver
First term saw mass corruption
2 wars to boost production
All done for your protection
C'est La Vie to French relations and to NATO's limitations that prevent occupations
Oh... bleed me til' I'm bled
Voices never heard, blues are getting' red
Kissin' Middle Eastern ass
Skull bones, black gold, and gas
He an irritation and a fucking boil

Young Abdel Madi Shabneh was only 18 years old,
He was the youngest of nine children, never spent a night away from home.
And his mother held his photograph up in the New York Times
You see the killing has intensified along the road to peace

He was a tall, thin boy with a whispy moustache disguised as an orthodox Jew
On a crowded bus in Jerusalem, some had survived World War Two
And the thunderous explosion blew out windows 200 yards away
With more retribution and seventeen dead along the road to peace

Now at King George Ave and Jaffa Road passengers boarded bus 14a
In the aisle next to the driver Abdel Madi Shabnet
And the last thing that he said on earth is "God is great and God is good"
And he blew them all to kingdom come upon the road to peace

Now in response to this another kiss of death was visited upon
Yasser Taha, Israel says is an Hamas senior militant
And Israel sent four choppers in, flames engulfed his white Opel
And it killed his wife and his three year old child leaving only a blackened skeleton

They found his toddlers bottle and a pair of small shoes and they waved them in front of the cameras
But Israel says they did not know that his wife and child were in the car
There are roadblocks everywhere and only suffering on TV
Neither side will ever give up their smallest right along the road to peace

Israel launched it's latest campaign against Hamas on Tuesday
And two days later Hamas shot back and killed five Israeli soldiers
So thousands dead and wounded on both sides most of them middle eastern civilians
They fill the children full of hate to fight an old man's war and die upon the road to peace

"Now this is our land we will fight with all our force" say the Palastinians and the Jews
Each side will cut off the hand of anyone who tries to stop the resistance
If the right eye offends thee then you must pluck it out
And Mahmoud Abbas said Sharon had been lost out along the road to peace

Once Kissinger said "we have no friends, America only has interests"
Now our president wants to be seen as a hero and he's hungry for re-election
But Bush is reluctant to risk his future in the fear of his political failure
So he plays chess at his desk and poses for the press 10,000 miles from the
road to peace

In the video that they found at the home of Abdel Madi Shabneh
He held a Kalashnikov rifle and he spoke with a voice like a boy
He was an excellent student, he studied so hard, it was as if he had a future
He told his mother that he had a test that day out along the road to peace

The fundamentalist killing on both sides is standing in the path of peace
But tell me why are we arming the Israeli army with guns and tanks and bullets?

And if God is great and God is good why can't he change the hearts of men?
Well maybe God himself is lost and needs help
Maybe God himself he needs all of our help
Maybe God himself is lost and needs help
He's out upon the road to peace

Well maybe God himself is lost and needs help
Maybe God himself he needs all of our help
And he's lost upon the road to peace
And he's lost upon the road to peace
Out upon the road to peace

Tom Waits, 'Road to Peace'

While I appreciate the sentiment, Tom Waits should stick to things he actually knows about, like hookers, cheap booze, and vomiting on his piano.

UPDATE - Please disregard my earlier post knocking Tom Waits. I just started listening to "Nighthawks at the Diner" for the first time in like ten years, and I had forgotten just how good he is.

"My pork cutlet just got off the plate and walked down the counter to pick a fight with my coffee, and the coffee was too weak to defend itself...."

That's too cool for school.

In my defense, if I recall the lyrics of songs from the album "Closing Time" he does tend to sing about a lot of drunken vomiting.

Yeah, Lif is one of those guys who's popular if you know the scene (so not really popular at all.) Here's the second verse to one of his song "Home of the Brave." I'll admit, it isn't the best verse ever, but you get the idea.

Headline: Bush steals the presidency
He needs the backing of the media what could the remedy be?
The country's headed for recession reminiscent of the Great Depression
Are lives worth a world of power? Easy question
Planes hit the towers and the Pentagon
Killing those the government wasn't dependant on
It's easy to control the scared so they keep us in fear
With their favorite Middle Eastern demon named Bin Laden this year
Bush disguises blood lust as patriotism
Convincing the living to love "Operation Let's Get 'Em"
But when he realized we don't support their attacks
They needed something to distract, hmm, anthrax
This further demonizes Afghanis
So Americans cheer while we kill their innocent families
And what better place to start a war
To build a pipeline to get the oil that they had wanted before
America supported the Taliban
To get Russia out of Afghanistan
That's how they got the arms in
They're in a war against the Northern Alliance
And we can't build a pipeline in hostile environments
Here's what your history books won't show:
You're a dead man for fucking with American dough
They killed several birds with one stone
While you're at home with anti-terrorism up in your dome
But my eyes are wide open and my TV is off
Great, 'cause I save on my electricity cost
And you can wave that piece of shit flag if you dare
But they killed us because we've been killing them for years

this is good too.

BRIGHT EYES LYRICS

"When The President Talks To God"

When the president talks to God
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women’s' rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Are the consonants all hard or soft?
Is he resolute all down the line?
Is every issue black or white?
Does what God say ever change his mind
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Does he fake that drawl or merely nod?
Agree which convicts should be killed?
Where prisons should be built and filled?
Which voter fraud must be concealed
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
I wonder which one plays the better cop
We should find some jobs. the ghetto's broke
No, they're lazy, George, I say we don't
Just give 'em more liquor stores and dirty coke
That's what God recommends

When the president talks to God
Do they drink near beer and go play golf
While they pick which countries to invade
Which Muslim souls still can be saved?
I guess god just calls a spade a spade
When the president talks to God

When the president talks to God
Does he ever think that maybe he's not?
That that voice is just inside his head
When he kneels next to the presidential bed
Does he ever smell his own bullshit
When the president talks to God?

I doubt it

I doubt it

even though its bright eyes.

Bin Laden didn't blow up the projects
It was you, nigga
Tell the truth, nigga
Bush knocked down the towers

I pledge no allegiance, nigga fuck the president's speeches
I'm baptized by America and covered in leeches
The dirty water that bleaches your soul and your facial features
Drownin' you in propaganda that they spit through the speakers
And if you speak about the evil that the government does
The Patriot Act'll track you to the type of your blood
They try to frame you, and say you was tryna sell drugs
And throw a federal indictment on niggaz to show you love
This shit is run by fake Christians, fake politicians
Look at they mansions, then look at the conditions you live in
All they talk about is terrorism on television
They tell you to listen, but they don't really tell you they mission
They funded Al-Qaeda, and now they blame the Muslim religion
Even though Bin Laden, was a CIA tactician
They gave him billions of dollars, and they funded his purpose
Fahrenheit 9/11, that's just scratchin' the surface

They say the rebels in Iraq still fight for Saddam
But that's bullshit, I'll show you why it's totally wrong
Cuz if another country invaded the hood tonight
It'd be warfare through Harlem, and Washington Heights
I wouldn't be fightin' for Bush or White America's dream
I'd be fightin' for my people's survival and self-esteem
I wouldn't fight for racist churches from the south, my nigga
I'd be fightin' to keep the occupation out, my nigga
You ever clock someone who talk shit, or look at you wrong?
Imagine if they shot at you, and was rapin' your moms
And of course Saddam Hussein had chemical weapons
We sold him that shit, after Ronald Reagan's election
Mercenary contractors fightin' a new era
Corporate military bankin' off the war on terror
They controllin' the ghetto, with the failed attack
Tryna distract the fact that they engineerin' the crack
So I'm strapped like Lee Malvo holdin' a sniper rifle
These bullets'll touch your kids, and I don't mean like Michael
Your body be sent to the morgue, stripped down and recycled
I fire on house niggaz that support you and like you
Cuz innocent people get murdered in the struggle daily
And poor people never get shit and struggle daily
This ain't no alien conspiracy theory, this shit is real

I think politics is a driver for deep passion to a lot of people-- why not musicians?

My only problem comes when metaphor and symbolism, which are powerful and universal messengers, are replaced with cheap, obvious jabs.

It's a lame shortcut taken by uninspired and lazy bandwagon-hoppers IMO.
Even my favorite band/singer is guilty of this in a few of the songs from his recent album, Year Zero-- some of them are fucking amazing-- The Good Soldier, God Given, My Violent Heart... full of feeling and an awesome vibe... others are embarrassingly unimaginative and blatantly anti George W. Bush-- "Capital G" being the worst offender I think.

In 10 years people are going to listen to that song and think-- why did this guy waste his talent on bashing a single man when our entire way of life, and all of us, played a part in allowing what's happening today to happen. George W will be forgotten-- he's a bit player in American History, despite what the hyperventilating intelligentsia would have you believe.
It is just lame-- think about the "Cold War" songs of the 80's-- they have 1/10th of the meaning that they once did... their shelf life is expired.

Now think about some of the anti-war songs of the 60's-- the ones that are still around are still here because they had a powerful message that didn't take opportunistic political jabs at individuals-- they made thoughtful and powerful observations on culture and society-- sentiments that are everlasting and always relevant.

Bush is a symbol. The front man. Trashing him is symbolic. It may be temporary, but then again, so is everything in politics.

How about this song:

10.000 YEARS (PEACE IS NOW)
===========================

the world is burning down
can't you smell the smoke in the air?
war, disease, and famine
this demon, she is everywhere

poets and preachers and politicians
they've all had their say
and we got 10,000 years
devoted to nothing
but tomorrow and yesterday

if all of the ignorance in the world
passed a second ago
what would you say?
who would you obey?
I am here to say that

peace is now

mr. president
I hereby pardon you of all your crimes
for they are just as much mine

selfishness and separation have led me
to believe that the world is not my problem
the world is not my problem
I am the world
and your are the world

if all the ignorance in the world
passed a second ago
what would you say?
who would you obey?
I am here to say that

peace is now

I loved the beginning of Xzibit's 'Weapons of mass destruction' album.

a british rap artist.. he knocks western society in general; not just the us.

Quote:

From the furthest point East to the wildest West
Powers travelled round the planet on a bloody conquest
European kings and priests with omnipotence
Soldiers freakin out in foreign lands killing citizens
And worse still spreading germs and plagues
Now is so much a result of those bad old days
From the town hall, to inner-city architecture
From the money in Surrey to sweatshops up in Leicester
Casino alcholics in the Mid-West,
junkies in Brazil feel the effects of mass death
The urge to learn killed by a greed for piles of gold
And churches justifying lives being sold
Though the culprits change, control rarely shifts
Only China comes close to even f#@*^!g with this
This world we call Earth and the system I dis
A lifestyle full of work where we barely exist
Look at Chile now - decimated native populations held down
The rich, white powers holding on
With British backing like Malaysias arms buying
The same gangs running the show
And Im trying to see through this and not become a lone hitman
Out to kill that bitch Maggie Thatcher with a sick plan
Sick bitch, supporting Pinochet in extradition
On telly, she put my brain into a strange position
So do you come to terms with devilish ways?
Or do you try to escape, run away or start to pray ?
I try to think about the positive things
One Love, no queen, one god, no king

I wish I had the will to fight back
Be at the World Trade Centre all dressed in black
Me and an angry pack
Instead I just rap and give back
And see a rich life and think..I still want to live that
Its so subtle how they muddle us
Now life is so complex we let the small things trouble us
And revolution ? Forget that for the one fact
We dont have the arms to even try to compete
Its even easier to keep your head down and stay asleep
And while youre lying there counting see your face in them sheep
And thats deep but not as deep as losing a child,
Seeing his teeth crushed by the rifle butt by your village hut
Pure grief, thanks to far away beef
Fried in messed-up religion half-baked in belief
So I wont stop rappimg till you get my drift
That were held in the Grip getting sorely dissed
Capitalists are we, we pretend were not
Buying better trainers each year, connecting dots
We go from first job to next job, to mortgage to kids
Make it harder to be happy 9-to-5in to live
Me Im striving to give but Ill hustle like mad
Just to get ahead in life
I need money so bad, yeah Im pissed now
So do you get my gist now ?
If hell existed, half the worlds already in the lift down..

In the Grip

Right. Actually I know exactly where my pot is grown, and it's not by TERRISTS or people who directly fund them. But the people who grow the pot I smoke are complicit, as are you and I, in perpetuating the status quo of the United States, its government and it's foreign policy, so long as we function and thrive within the machinations of this system.

And if I was purchasing large quantities of heroin, you bet I'd wonder how my actions might ultimately contribute to a state of affairs that it would be all too convenient to simply "Blame Bush" or some other scapegoat for. Every action we take has implication. If i was to buy a gram of black tar from a spooky guy downtown is that incident somehow insulated from the phenomenon of black market drug proliferation or the world at large? Do you honestly believe war in the middle east has nothing to do with you, that you are in no way complicit?

So wait, you're saying if I buy pot from a dealer I support terrorism? Give me a break.

No, the point is not about buying pot, it's about the fact that living in the US, under the conditions required of you in order to live here, contributes to the state of the world at large, whether you are growing pot, potatoes, kids, not growing anything at all, it doesn't matter. I'm suggesting it should be considered how every single one of our actions, or non-actions, affects the world.

I think you are ignoring matters of degree. I contribute mere pennies to Bush, under threat of imprisonment, and I actively speak against him. I think that distances me.

Seriously, saying I'm as bad as Bush because I pay taxes is like saying I'm as bad as a child molester because I pay taxes which go to prisons. The contribution is so indirect and countered by personal action as to be irrelevant.

i dont like when music and politics mix. nothing wrong with musicians playing at rallies or demonstrations or whatever, or having lyrics about society, but when they start singing about specific people, parties, or the like, that's when it crosses the line and i want nothing to do with it. music to me is something that makes me happy, makes me think, not something that should shove propaganda down my throat.

I'm going to name drop here:

Trent Reznor is from a town very near my hometown. I am good friends with a guy whose family is friends with the Reznor family. Trent used to come over to their house all of the time. Also, Trent's dad is in a band with my friend's dad.

Small world.
