Jar Photos
    #6918945 -

Hi,
Im about to start my first grow using the PF-Tek method. I'm from the UK and wide mouthed jars arn't as easy to come buy as they are in the US. I went out shoping for materials today and found three jars I think might be suitable. However I wasn't completely sure so decided to buy one of each, get someone with some experience to have a look and then go back and buy a dozen of the 'best' one. I've brought a pressure cooker off the internet and it should be arriving tommorow, so I will also give them a test run to see if they melt. So please could you tell me A, B, C (or none of them!)?.

these are all three jars

first jar

second jar

third jar

Both the second and third jars claim to be pp5 (meaning they should be able to take the heat of the pressure cooker). Im not so sure about the lid on the first one. Also the second one claims to be 100% air tight and has a clip on lid. Could this be a problem if i want to let co2 out at a later stage? It also has a removable rubber bit to keep it air tight. I thought one and two might be too tall?
thanks!

I'm in the UK too. I just use normal glass drinking cups of roughly a half pint capacity, and cap them off with tinfoil. I use two caps - one with four holes punched in it as an undercap for inoculating through, the other as a protective overcap.

You can upload pictures to the Shroomery on your userpage. If you want RogerRabbit to look at them (and if you want a reputable experienced opinion, you do), that'll be the only way.

I've mended the links and switched to the shroomery servers (the pictures worked fine when I first posted them, angelfire must have moved them or something. Didn't realise you could put them on the shroomery. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Oh, and who's rogerrabbit?

i like the second one. you don't want your jar to ever be air tight. if you take out the rubber sealer and just use the cap, i bet you'd have yourself a nice pf jar. or you could keep it and just drill a hole in the top and stuff polyfil through it (cover with aluminium in PC).
be sure to use dry verm on top.

if you ordered a PC offline, you could get some mason jars offline too for pretty cheap if none of those work out for you. they are cheap as dirt, and are garenteed to work.

If you don't mind ordering off of the net have a look at these.

http://www.micro-science.co.uk/shop/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=72

They work out just over a pound each (min ÂŁ5 delivery from that site though)
They do go a bit soft in a PC but as long as you don't stack em they are excellent. But once they cool they are back to normal.

you obviously haven't had a lot of time to research the site yet.
you don't need a pc to do pf jars.

i wasted a couple of weeks looking into the PF tek myself.
the jars are a bugger to find here in the uk, and bloody expensive.

as you have a pc coming soon, you may as well look into the various grain teks....here's a couple:

Ah. You're thinking of using tupperware jars. I wouldn't risk them in a pressure cooker. I'd really recommend using drinking glasses.

Sorry if this is going slightly of the thread, I think it is usefull though.

I've been thinking about trying wbs in UK.
I done brf cakes and dunk and rolled them which seems to work quite well so far.
I have been reading the WBS teks and am considering having a go.

What do you use to case the wbs and where do you get your casing materials in the UK?

Alright, If you are planning on pressure cooking those jars which it sounds like you are i would just use all three BUT u need to do a few things....For the glass jar with the red lid use tinfoil as a lid and when its time to inoculate just stick the needle through the tinfoil and make some slightly bigger holes and cover them with micropore tape for FAE...For the other jars poke 2-4 holes in the lids and cover them with tinfoil for pressure cooking then take it off when its time to inoculate and put micropore tape over those holes as well...I get away with PCing my liquid culture mixtures in plastic containers simmalar to those so you should be fine, just dont leave them in too long (20-25min at 15psi) hope that helps a little

Here's a pic of a microbox in action.

All I had to do was pop 4 holes in the top.
I cover them in selotape (end bit folded over on itself to make a tab so it can be pulled back to pop the syringe in to inoculate and then stuck back down quick).

Thats a 1 pint cake.

Thank you all! I've not decided what I'm going to use yet, I'll shove these three in the PC when it turns up and see how they take the heat. Someone also recomended I try Tesco's as apparently they sell some suitable jars cheap.
Thanks!
Oh, what does FAE mean?

I tested them all in the pressure cooker at 15 PSI for 20-30 minutes and none of them melted or reacted to the heat at all (including the plastic lid on the first jar which I was expecting to melt). So I'm thinking of going with six of the first jar and six of the second jar (as the shop I found them in only has half a dozen of each left). Can anyone see any potential problems with using these two jars? Sorry about the continued questions- I just don't want to mess up the entire grow because of some silly easily avoidable error!
Thanks again,
James

They dont make jams and jellies in the u.k.? I heard a guy with the same problem. He used unflanged glass Jam jars after he ate the jam out; and sterilized in a dishwasher. Also mole sauce jars. Those 3 jars look like
you can birth them out; and you said they PC so they`re good for a go.
I dont understand why grandmas in the U.K. wouldn`t make preserves; Homemade preserves are tastier than store bought jellies.

They do, well my dad makes jams but they use tapered jars so they couldn't be birthed from them. I don't 'get' why you'd need jars without a tapered top to make jams..... but then my knowledge of jam making is quite (read: extremelly) limited!

Kerr invented and patented their jars; and are based in America. Metal lids used to leave a metallic taste to the food; Wide mouths where impossible before screw caps. I`m guessing the use of a wide mouth is for birthing solids
