To make things simple buy some pre-mixed cactus soil & (I use) Schultz's cactus food every other time I water. They should get a solid 12 hours of sun a day, their indigenous to south Texas and Mexico so you get the idea. And as far as watering goes - I just bought a moisture meter (>$10) and I just water my cacti whenever the soil gets bone dry, which ends up being about one every week and 1/2.

Grats, and G/L.

i find the best indicator for watering is to give the little fellows a gentle squeeze... if they are nice and firm then dont water, when they begin to soften slightly give them a drink... its not doing my 100+ lophs any harm at all

A good test as well, I just have about 30 other cacti that I water on the same schedule - and they are not all squeeze friendly

Thats true, the squish test is a good one.  Thing is with grafts they are always happy to drink.  They never go soft.

But then again Ohmatic doesn't have grafts yet.

I am scared fo having them soft because it reminds me of when i get rot.

i like using african cichlid tank substrate. It's crushed coral and other agrogates. Perfect for minerals.

I use that with a lot of perelite, and quarey compress stone dust, and some coco coir or compost, for some extra organics.

the soil appears to be rather dry already as the cactci/sun seem to have sucked the moisture out of it.
when i repotted them, the soil felt a little moist, i baught a special premixed cactus soil
so i am sure it had the right water content.

however it already has got cracks already and also you can see how it shrinks from the outsides of the pots !
especially visible in the pot on the upper left of the picture:

i wonder if watering the on monday will be a good decision ?
they have been in their new post for almost a week then.

Watering them once a week is no biggie, as long as you don't over do it.

top the pots with gravel/stone, this will prevent the soil drying out too fast.

I'm pretty sure when you water it should be wetting the entire medium all the way down to the bottom. A good way to do this is to submerse the pots in a sink of water.
The key with cactus is to make sure that right after you water, you put them back outside so the heat and possibly wind can dry the surface areas off quickly.
I wouldn't do this more than every couple weeks.

Put them on a south-facing window, preferably with a radiator underneath it. Keep them well ventilated by opening the window, especially on hot days. To prevent spider mite attacks keep them well ventilated and use a water sprayer on them often. Make sure the soil dries out between each watering. Re-pot them if you wish but I wouldn's recomend it. Peyote seems to grow well in small pots like you have. The more soil there is the more moisture it will trap, which peyote doesn't enjoy.

Quote:

why shallow? peyote roots get quite long in comparison to their body.

If the pots are too long it stunts the growth. That tap root is going to be growing very very slowly so don't worry about lack of space, just re-pot next spring, that's when I do it. I recomend putting some grit on the top of the soil to prevent base rot. Also, you'll want to feed it every few weeks during the summer. You can use a normal fertilizer but only at half strength as high nitrogen content will burn your peyote. Preferably, use catcus fertilizer with trace minerals in it as well.

Quote:

i got them at my window now but currently its quite chill,
could that be a problem ?

They will be fine down to around four or five degrees celcius as long as they are kept absalutely dry. If wet, keep as warm as possible. I wouldn't water them on rainy/cool days either.

Not sure what the brown spot is but I've had them on mine and it hasn't affected the cactus except cosmetically.

maybe i am off but that almost looks like something ate it as it seems to be rather indented and smooth. i have had snails eat my cacti, although not lophs. just a guess.
