Maza : overlay or cobweb? (pic)
    #691661 - 06/20/02 11:51 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

It's all matted and greyish, and sticks to the the casing soil like cobweb?

Is this normal? should I scrape it or do something? What is it?

11th day in terrarium.

P.S. for Anno: No, this is in no FAQ.

Looks like a contam my friend. Im sorry.

Any unusual odors? Dont smell it, but, if it smells a little rank then you know for sure. I can usually smell a mushroomy smell with mycelium.

Might be cobweb, but usually its more whispy. Looks like something a little phishy for sure however.

WTF! That is just overlay! The casing is fine! That is 99% sure mycelia - just leave it, and give it plenty of fanning and it will fruit!!

Thank you! It's true that it looks strange compared to my other white/fluffy Gulf Coast casing.

LilMerlin.

you might want to separate it from the others to be safe at least.

Well it looks very grey on my monitor, so I still think it does have a possibility of being a contam. Yes I do agree that cobweb is much more whispy however.

See what happends. Take your hand and bring some air to your nose from the casing. If there isnt any weird smell, smell it closer and see if it smells mushroomy.

Leave it where it is! Its just overlay that has been repeatedly sprayed with water - hence the sticky look. Gulf Coast, PES Amazonians and Puertos tend to overlay like that and the best option would be to give it a good scratch or cover with more casing material.
Try and keep the moisture content of the casing lower - overlay like that is usually the result of tomentose or cottony mycelia that tends to overlay and be harder to fruit than rhizomorphic mycelia. Up the fanning and even try and cold shock

I agree, Maz's definately overlay if you let them.
Have they pinned/flushed yet?
You have 2 choices:
1/ Let it be.
2/ Scratch it with a sterile fork, and add a thin layer of damp verm.

Judging by the pic, there is no sign of knotting yet, and the Myc looks too matted to form pins, so maybe go with option 2 for you!

Good luck

Did you spray the hell out of it? It could just be matted and sealed from too much spraying. But, I honestly dont know.

it looks like sealed mycelium to me. are you spraying it directly with water or something? thats my guessing.

No, it hasn't pinned yet.

And many of you are right... I sprayed it a lot and directly on in in the beginning.

I'll do what DreaMaTrix and Bluemeanie advise: scratch and recase with damp verm.

Still, I'm not sure I will not get a ultrasonic humidifier, because that hand spraying and manual fanning puzzle me.

Anyway, I thank you for your answers. I thought I would let them like that until contam strikes all of them. Eventually, I noticed on a 4 day Gulf Coast casing two green areas. I put it in quarantaine. In one week I'll go on a 2 week holiday and my father is going to take care of the remaining casings. So, I'm not expecting a frank succes before I get back.

Well, thanks to all of you.

LilMerlin.

hehe your dad is going to take care of them? thats funny cool!

To remedy your situation, Id personally just take some casing and gently cover the overlayed spots. I dont like scratching...im always worried about damaging forming pins.
